	ELLIOTT, Donald L. "Donnie" - 78, of Lower 
	Sackville passed away unexpectedly at home on March 24, 2012. Born in 
	Pleasant Hills, Colchester County, he was the oldest child of John Llewelyn 
	and Doris Ruth (Brown) Elliott. In the early 1960's, he and his father built 
	many homes in the newly expanding Sackville area. Donnie is survived by 
	daughter, Donna; son, Scott; granddaughter, Emma; stepchildren, Robert 
	(Karen) Wagner, Valerie Wagner; step-grandchildren, Alexander, Austin, 
	Megan; sisters, Barbara Starritt (Martin), Glenda Cock (Donald); aunts, 
	Margaret Oxner, Joyce Harper, Agnes Brown; and many nieces, nephews and 
	cousins. He was predeceased by his companion, Dorothy Patricia Wagner. 
	Funeral service was held March 31, 2012 in St. John the Evangelist Anglican 
	Church, 954 Old Sackville Road, Lower Sackville, Rev. Sandra Hounsell-Drover

	COX, James Campbell “Jim” - 69, Truro, passed away on Saturday, March 
	24, 2012, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Truro, he was a son of 
	the late Campbell “Cam” and Kathleen “Kaye” (Landsburg) Cox. Jim is survived 
	by his wife of 45 years, the former Emma Louise Messervey; daughter, Tami 
	Cox Jardine, Falmouth, and her children, Drew, Logan and Lauren and their 
	father, Don Jardine, Falmouth; son, Barry (Pam), Enfield, and their 
	children, Madyson, Faith and Adrianna; special companion and fishing buddy,

	MATHESON, Lawrence Dewar - 84, Truro, passed away Friday, March 30, 
	2012, in the Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born in Cherry Valley, 
	PEI, he was a son of the late Furness and Grace (Jenkins) Matheson. He is 
	survived by sons, Gary (Carla), Kenny (Joan), Larry (Noreen), all of Truro; 
	daughters, Ruby Weatherbee (Sonny) of Miramichi, NB; Arlene MacLaren (Bobby) 
	of Onslow; grandson, Andrew; granddaughters, Kathy, Kimmy, Michelle, 
	Melissa, Ceilidh; several great-grandchildren; special friend, Ina Gulliver. 
	He was predeceased by his wife, Jean Louise (Smith) Matheson; brother,

	ROOP, John Randall “Randy" - Brookfield, passed away peacefully at 
	home on Friday, March 30, 2012, at the age of 65. Born in Truro, he was the 
	devoted husband of Betty (Campbell) and loving father to Pam (Steve 
	Olmstead), Bedford; Andrew (Becky Muise), Brookfield; Sherry (Jason Ovsenny), 
	Toronto; and Jack (Leah Densmore), Brookfield. Grandfather (“Bitty”) to Zach 
	Olmstead, Alexa, Logan and Hope Roop, and Charlotte and Emily Ovsenny. 
	Brother to Robert (Margaret). Also survived by many nieces and nephews. 
	Predeceased by parents, Jack and Vivian Roop; sister, Jeal; and 
	sister-in-law, Twila Roop. Randy was owner operator of Roop’s Esso and 
	Roop’s Cleaners. His sharp business acumen and his unrivaled work ethic 
	helped expand these businesses through the addition of Nelson’s Cleaners 
	(Truro), Sunshine Cleaners (New Glasgow) and the purchase of a Tim Horton’s 
	franchise to accompany Roop’s Esso. Randy was very proud to be able to pass 
	the businesses along to his sons prior to his passing. Funeral service was

	NUTTALL, June – 82, of Advocate Harbour passed away Thursday, April 
	5, 2012 at Bayview Memorial Health Care Centre, Advocate Harbour. Born in 
	Glasgow, Scotland, she was a daughter of the late William and Lillian 
	(Smith) Menzies. She was an avid bingo player, and loved to knit, quilt and 
	assist others throughout her community. She is survived by daughters, Susan 
	Archibald (George), Kennetcook; Pam Nuttall, Fenelon Falls, Ont.; a son, 
	Blair Nuttall (Dianne), Apple River; 5 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren.

	DAHR, Donald Arthur – 80, Sutherland’s Lake passed away peacefully at 
	home on April 7, 2012. Born in Port Dufferin, Halifax Co., he was a son of 
	the late John and Myrtle (Robart) Dahr. Donald was a dedicated member of the 
	Blue Knight Chapter I for over 30 years. He was actively involved in 
	community benefits and the snowmobile club. He will be sadly missed by all 
	who knew him. He is survived by daughter, Donna (Buddy Shupe) Myers, 
	Masstown; son, Donald (Laurie Goodwin), Masstown; sister, Gloria MacDonald, 
	Stellarton; brothers, Dennis (Alice), New Minas, Gordon (Barbara),

	COOKE, Gladys Elizabeth – 91, Bible Hill, passed away on Easter 
	Sunday, April 8, 2012, at the Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro, 
	surrounded by her loving family. Born on September 28, 1920, in Bass River, 
	she was a daughter of the late John and Bessie Gamble. In 1935 she moved to 
	Hilden, where she married Gerald Cooke and raised their family. She was a 
	former employee of Brookfield Foods (Scotsburn Dairy) in Truro and Port 
	Hawkesbury. She and Gerry retired to the Truro area in 1981. Gladys is 
	survived by daughters Margaret Bruce, Bible Hill, and Eleanor Instant 
	(Ernest), Abbotsford, B.C.; son David Cooke (Jean), London, Ont.; 
	grandchildren Steve Bruce (Margo), Dartmouth; Carolyn Johnson, Brantford, 
	Ont.; Kim Instant, Williams Lake, B.C.; David Instant (Sheryl), Coquitlam, 
	B.C.; and Brian Cooke (Nikki), Zurich, Ont.; 13 great-grandchildren; and 
	many nieces, nephews and dear friends across Canada. She is also survived by 
	sister Lucille Seaman, New Glasgow, and sisters-in-law Mildred Cooke, Bible 
	Hill, and Jean Hamilton (Don), Brookfield. Gladys was predeceased by her 
	husband Gerald, who also passed away on Easter Sunday in 2003, sister 
	Genevieve Fisher and brother Douglas Gamble. A memorial service was held 
	April 12, 2012. Cremation has taken place, with interment to follow at the

	HAMILTON, Nita Virginia (Billy) - 36, Truro was born October 10, 1975 
	in British Columbia. She passed away peacefully with family by her side at 
	Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro on April 9, 2012. Nita will be sadly 
	missed by her four children, Leo, British Columbia, Carolyn, Ashley and 
	Kevin Nourry of Montreal, Quebec, her Mother and seven sisters in British 
	Columbia, The Hamilton Families and many nieces and nephews. Born in British 
	Columbia she moved to Belmont, Nova Scotia with her husband, Dwayne and then 
	later to Truro, Nova Scotia where Nita met many new friends which became a

	McLAUGHLIN, Bertha May - Bible Hill, passed away at the Colchester 
	Hospital on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at the age of 98. Born in East Mines, 
	Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Tupper and May (Robertson) 
	Reid. Bertha will be sadly missed by her children: son, David (Shirley)

	BLAIKIE, Mary Irene – 66, Truro passed away peacefully, with family 
	and friends by her side, April 17, 2012 in Colchester Regional Hospital, 
	Truro following a courageous battle with cancer. Born March 3, 1946 in East 
	Walton, Hants Co., she was a daughter of the late George and Ada (Lake) 
	Hart. She is survived by her loving husband of 37 years, Gary and will be 
	sadly missed by her pet dog, “Buddy”. Mary is also survived by sisters, 
	Dorothy Swan, Bible Hill, Anne Kennedy, Halfway Brook, Rose McKinnon, Truro;

	ELLS, EVA M. - 92, of Advocate Harbour passed away peacefully on 
	Friday, April 20, 2012 at South Cumberland Community Care Centre, Parrsboro. 
	Born in New Salem, she was a daughter of the late Havelock and Sophia (Finniss) 
	Mosher. Eva was a member of the Advocate Baptist Church for many years, as 
	well as the Emma Dewis Auxiliary. She was a very active member of her 
	community. She is survived by her husband, Reginald; loving mother of her 
	daughters, Charlotte Webster, Saint John, N.B.; Sharon Neves, Truro; Maureen

	CAMPBELL, Graham Dartt - Truro, passed away 
	peacefully Thursday evening, February 23, 2012 in the Colchester Regional 
	Hospital Truro. The Campbell twins were born in Alton, Colchester County, on 
	March 10, 1942, two months premature weighing less than three pounds each to 
	the late Alvin E. and Vina (Dickson) Campbell. He is survived by his wife 
	Jane (MacLachlan); daughter Krista (Daniel) Poole, Bible Hill and their 
	children Rebecca and Christopher; sons, Trevor (Tamara), Hortonville and 
	their children Kyle, Courteney, Kalum and Connor; Colin (Allison), Truro and 
	his daughter Sheridan; twin brother, Gordon (Carol), Brookfield; foster 
	sisters, Patsy (Herb) McCallum and Betty (Randy) Roop both of Brookfield; 
	stepchildren, Andrew Heffernan, Albany, NY; Annette Heffernan, Mississauga, 
	ON; Amy (Jason) Muis and their daughter Lucy, Sheet Harbour, NS;

	RIPLEY, Nellie May - 100 years, Truro, peacefully followed the light 
	to enter “a better world” on Wednesday evening, February 29, 2012. Born in 
	Truro, October 30, 1911, she lived in Londonderry for 50 years, Oxford for 
	34, and at Samuel Prince Manor in Halifax for 13, before entering Garden 
	Road Neighborhood at Cedarstone Enhanced Care almost 3 years ago. Daughter 
	of the late Ethel Dewar, she was raised by Lillian and Daniel Meekins of 
	Londonderry. Predeceased by her husband, Arthur, 50 years ago, and by sons 
	Paul in 1970, and Joseph in 2001, She is survived by son, John, and 
	daughters, Ida and Ruth (Ross), all of Montreal, youngest son, Art, of 
	Calgary, and daughter-in-law, Beverly (Don) of Malagash; grandchildren,

	BENJAMIN, Willis Elwood - 82, Truro, passed away at Cedarstone 
	Enhanced Care on February 29, 2012. Willis was born at Wallace Station, Nova 
	Scotia, the son of the late Millard and Ruby (Angevine) Benjamin. He was 
	employed for some time at Scott Trucks in Debert and at the NSAC in Bible 
	Hill, from which he retired in 1990. He is survived by his wife Thelma (Langille); 
	sons, David (Gwen) and Craig (Heather) and grandchildren, Andrew, Matthew, 
	and Owen; brother-in-law, Elmon Langille, New Annan; sisters-in-law, Joyce 
	Benjamin, Ottawa, Marie MacKay, Debert, Carrie Matheson, Tatamagouche, Rita 
	Keizer, Dartmouth, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his

	McPHEE, Nina Agnes – 95, Parkland Estates, Truro and formerly of 
	Crane Hill Road, Westphal passed away March 1, 2012. Born in Bass River, 
	Nova Scotia she was a daughter of the late Perley and Lottie (Greenough) 
	Davison. Nina was the wife of the late G. Ellis McPhee who passed away in 
	2002. After graduating from Normal College in Truro, Nina taught in rural 
	schools of Nova Scotia for a number of years. Nina is survived by brother, 
	Bill Davison, Coquitlam, BC; sister-in-law, Ann (Fred's wife), Abbotsford, 
	BC and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, Dr. David 
	Davison and his wife, Freda, Rev. Fred Davison, a sister Mildred Davison and

	RIPLEY, William “Dawson”, 86, Truro, passed away peacefully, March 2, 
	2012 in Cedarstone Enhanced Care, Truro. Born in Athol, Cumberland County he 
	was the son of the late William and Estella (Johnson) Ripley and was the 
	last surviving member of his family. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, 
	Annie “Lavinia”; niece, Charlene (Garth) Palmer; nephew, John (Gina) 
	Stewart. Dawson was predeceased by sisters, Amy, Ruth and Shirley. A

	GRAHAM, G. Harris J. - 94, of Diligent River, and formerly of 
	Dartmouth, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday, 
	March 8, 2012 at Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan. Born 
	in Wharton, he was a son of the late Albert and Carrie (Jenks) Graham. He 
	served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II, as a radar 
	technician in Shelby, England. Following the war, he returned to Dartmouth 
	and worked with Maritime Tel & Tel for 42 years. He married Mary Elizabeth 
	Hill of Dartmouth in May of 1946, who predeceased him in April, 2002. He is 
	survived by daughters, Harriet McWhirter (Harvie), Crowe's Mills; Lucy 
	Graham, Lethbridge, Alta.; Ruth Couture (Alain), Embrun, Ont.; 
	grandchildren, Patrick McWhirter (Rachel), Thornhill, Ont.; Averill Huxter 
	(Darren), Gaspe, QC; two great grandchildren, Owen and Nicholas Huxter; 
	sister, Lauretta Barteaux (Alton, deceased), Mt. Hanley; a brother, Clayton

	GELDART, Edward Hayes – 78, Middle Stewiacke, passed away peacefully 
	at home, January 30, 2012. Born in Economy, NS, he was the last surviving

	(Marks) Geldart. Edward began working in the wood camps at the age of 15. He 
	worked for many years for Acadian Lines in Halifax and later returned to

	MARTIN, Joan Janet (MacKenzie) – born February 4, 1934 in Truro, N.S. 
	Joan was the daughter of the late William and Jean (Pelton) MacKenzie and 
	step-daughter of the late Elwin Barrett, Truro. Joan went to Toronto in the 
	1950’s and worked for Eaton’s for thirteen years and at the Canadian 
	National Institute for the Blind, both in the accounts office. She also 
	worked for East York Community Care, taking care of seniors in their homes. 
	Joan and her husband retired to Truro in 1994. She is survived by daughter, 
	Valerie (Paul) Sheppard, Brooklin, ON; son, Don (Cathy), Toronto, Ontario;

	OGDEN, Marian Elizabeth – 58, Truro, passed away on Thursday, 
	February 9, 2012 in the Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born in Truro 
	on January 11, 1954, she was the daughter of the late Max and Marie 
	(Donovan) Ogden of Truro. She attended the Truro Public School System and in 
	her Junior High School years was the head and spokesperson for many youth 
	groups and received an award for her initiatives for promoting youth in the 
	Truro community. She worked at the Royal Theatre in Truro and was appointed 
	manager in July of 1975. In April of 1977 at the age of 23 she was appointed 
	manager of the Twin Cinemas in Charlottetown, PEI. She had also worked for 
	many years at the Best Western Glengarry, Truro. Marian is survived by her 
	brother Max (Linda), East Mountain; niece Christine Ogden and nephew David 
	Ogden, Oromocto, NB. She was predeceased by her parents and twin brothers 
	Charles Bruce and Amos Max. Cremation has taken place under the direction of

	McINNIS, Daniel Joseph “Dannie” - 80, Truro Heights, formerly of 
	Debert, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, February 10, 2012. Born in 
	Glace Bay, he was the son of the late William and Christina (McNeil)

	AKERMAN, Harland Boyd - August 8, 1918 - February 12, 2012. Born in 
	Westville, Nova Scotia to Caroline and David Akerman, Earl Woodger (Lucy) 
	and Hilbert (Ruth) welcomed their new brother. Later, to an expanding 
	Akerman clan - Carl (Bernie), Marvin (Loretta), Jean (Lloyd), Howard (Joan), 
	Marion, and Dick (Kay) were born. Harland became his mother's right-hand 
	helper in all her household and child rearing tasks. He was selected for 
	training in the RCAF as a pilot in WWII and served on many harrowing 
	missions in Europe and Africa. He flew a Hurricane which required a lot of 
	will, determination and skill to fly. In 1944, Harland became Pilot Officer 
	assigned to a special Section. After the war, he returned home to marry 
	Kathleen McLellan (1919-1958), attended Dalhousie University, and started a 
	family. He relocated his family to the mining town of Levack where Gail 
	Sobol (Fred Law), David (Gail) and Wayne (Gayle) were brought up. Harland 
	again had a chance to hone his child rearing and household skills for ten 
	years as a widower. In 1968, he chose Audrey Roberts (1913-2005) as his wife

	family. His expanded family, a new brick home in Dowling built, the garden 
	and his active role in church life kept him busy until retirement. Once 
	retired, he and Audrey moved back to their origins in Great Village, Nova 
	Scotia. A home and a cottage at Five Houses were then built and both housed 
	great gardens. Grandchildren Kathleen (Trevor Popowich), Alison Sobol, 
	Sylvie Rodrigue , Curtis (Gail), Craig (Mandy), Cara (David Jordan), Matthew 
	and Adam, Robert and Thomas Desautels, as well as Susan and Joe Fazakas 
	enjoyed fishing, clam digging, rock hounding, playing games and baseball 
	with Grandpa. On June 12, 2010, Harland, friends and family celebrated his 
	marriage to Audrey Rector. Her children, Elston (Sharon) and Colleen then 
	too became part of his extended family. They began their lives together on 
	an unforgettable honeymoon trip to Newfoundland in an RV which was amazingly

	WINTERS, Roy H. - 87, Parrsboro passed away Monday, February 13, 2012 
	at South Cumberland Community Care Centre, Parrsboro. Born in Parrsboro, he 
	was a son of the late Claude and Vera (Bullerwell) Winters. Roy served with 
	the merchant marine during World War II. Following the war, he was a marine 
	engineer for Atlantic Towing for many years, retiring in 1986. Roy enjoyed 
	animals, fiddle music and long walks on the beach. As well, he enjoyed a 
	good game of darts and checkers. He is survived by his wife, the former

	JONES, Ethel Deborah-Lee (June 25, 1954 - February 17, 2012) passed 
	away suddenly and peacefully February 17, 2012, in QEII Hospital, Halifax, 
	N. S. surrounded by family and friends. Born and raised in Truro, she was 
	the daughter of the late Willena Beatrice and the late Elmer Alvin Jones. 
	She completed the Transition Year Program (TYP), obtained her Bachelor of 
	Arts and her Bachelor of Education. She continued her formal academic 
	scholastic education by working on her Masters degree in French all at 
	Dalhousie University, Halifax, N.S. She was the recipient of many 
	scholarships, awards, bursaries and citations. Prior to studying and 
	teaching in France, Debby worked for several years at Canada Employment 
	Student Manpower and was a Housemother to many young women at Dalhousie 
	University. Debby taught in Truro, France, and Halifax metro. Several years 
	ago, she retired from teaching. She was a lifelong member of Zion United 
	Baptist Church, Truro, N.S., former member Pilgrim Baptist Church, Winnipeg, 
	and attended Cornwallis Street Baptist Church, while in Halifax. Debby loved 
	music! She sang and toured for many years with the acclaimed acappella group 
	Four the Moment. Debby is survived by her sisters Marie Francis (Truro, N.S.), 
	Janis Jones (Burnaby, B.C.), Luella and Lynn Jones (Halifax), brothers 
	Burnley "Rocky"(Sharon) (Halifax),and Roger (Burnaby, BC). Debby was

	FULTON, Donald Lloyd – 92, Bass River passed away Wednesday, February 
	22, 2012 in Veteran’s Memorial Hospital, Halifax. Born October 27, 1919 he 
	was the youngest of eleven children born to the late Scott and Karrie 
	(Knight) Fulton of Bass River. He is survived by son, Bill (Joanne), Bass

	grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife,

	Eva and a sister in infancy. He served overseas in the Second World War. He 
	was employed with the Dept. of Highways for 33 years. He had many good times

	DICKIE, Gordon Henry – 85, Central Onslow passed away quietly January 
	8, 2012 in Williams Country Home, Hilden. Born in Onslow, he was a son of 
	the late Walter and Hilda Dickie. Gordon lived and farmed in Onslow his 
	entire life and was very interested in breeding and showing his Holsteins. 
	He showed his cattle throughout the Maritimes and at the Royal Winter Fair 
	in Toronto. Gordon was still tending his calves at the age of 80. He also 
	owned and trained horses at the Truro Raceway for many years. He was very 
	interested in the 4-H Program. Gordon was very good natured, enjoyed life 
	and with his brother, Vaughan for many years ran the always popular “Dickie 
	Brothers Barn Dances”. He is survived by his wife, Mary “Frances” (Audas); 
	step-daughters, Linda Yuill, Ginger (Gerry) MacCallum, both of Central 
	Onslow; step-son, Tony (Yolanda) Gillis, Central Onslow; sister, Estelle

	GILBERT, Adel E. - It is with a great sense of loss the family of 
	Adel E. Gilbert, 85, of Springhill, announces her death. She passed away on 
	Thursday, January 26, 2012 at the home of her daughter, "little" Adel 
	Dorothy, in Parrsboro, surrounded by her family. Adel was born and raised in 
	Springhill where she lived for the vast majority of her life. In 2008 she 
	moved to Centennial Villa, Amherst and in 2011 relocated to the South 
	Cumberland Community Care Center, Parrsboro. As a young woman, she worked in 
	Truro at Stanfields. When she met her future husband, Reg, she returned to 
	Springhill. Adel and Reg had four children, and since Reg worked away on 
	tankers for Imperial Oil, Adel was left to raise them. Adel was a lifetime 
	member of the Phythian Sisters, a Returning Officer for many municipal, 
	provincial and federal elections, and for many years was the Ward 2 Captain 
	for the Canadian Cancer Society. She also was a volunteer for the Terry Fox 
	run. Adel is survived by her sons, David, Brantford, Ont.; John Sussex, 
	N.B.; daughters, Chris Patterson. Tatamagouche and Adel Dorothy, Parrsboro; 
	grandchildren Christopher Gilbert, Brantford, Ont., Jennifer Gilbert,

	SPICER, Carson C. – of East Apple River. Our beloved father Carson 
	Spicer passed away Friday, December 2, 2011 in Bayview Memorial Health Care 
	Centre, Advocate Harbour with his brother, Duncan, by his side. Born in 1926 
	at East Apple River, he was the first son of John Brenton and Agnes Mae 
	(Johnson) Spicer. He will be missed by his brothers, Clair, Glendon, Duncan

	announce the passing of Gerald Freeman Gower after a lengthy illness, on
