PRIEST, Evelena Blanche - 94, Economy, passed away peacefully Sunday, November 8, 2009, in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born May 27, 1915, in Pleasant Hills, she was a daughter of the late David and Bridget (Randall) Newton. Evelena is survived by her children, Donald Priest, Economy; Vivian Bethune, Lincoln, Maine; Donna Colborne, British Columbia; seven grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; seven great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Robert Priest; daughter, Dorothy; sisters, Mary Gamble, Freda Starritt, Annie Pettigrew, Etta Boggs, Helen Suttis, Verdi Newton; brothers, Clarence and Eldridge Newton; son-in-law, Percy Bethune; special companion, James Welton. Cavanagh, Charles “Donald” - 84, Truro, passed away at home on Wednesday, November 11, 2009, with his loving family by his side. Born in Truro, he was a son of the late Charles and Georgina (Reid) Cavanagh. Donald was lifelong resident of Truro and member of First United Church. Donald retired from Stanfield’s with 43 years of service. He served overseas during the Second World War in England and North West Europe and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 26, Truro. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Thelma; sons, Michael, Alberta, Danny (Shelley), Upper Onslow, Kenneth, Truro; 5 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; sister in-law, Rose Cavanagh, England; nieces Dawn and Geraldine, both in Australia. Donald was predeceased by brother, Percy. On November 16 a Royal Canadian Legion Branch 26 Tribute Service at 2 pm was followed by a memorial service in Colchester Community Funeral Home with Rev. Currie, Stuart D., of Crowes Mills passed away the 11th day of November 2009 in the Colchester Regional Hospital at the age of 79. Stuart was born in Crowes Mills and was the son of the late Burton and Ella (Totten) Currie. He is survived by his wife Joanna; daughter, Jane (John Wile) Crowes Mills; sons, Daniel, Debert, Jamie (Michele) Pictou County, Timothy and Doug Ross, both of Crowes Mills; grandchildren, Russell Wile, Erin (Justin Oakley), Ellen (Kyle Conrad) Wile, Justin and Ryan Currie; great grandchildren, Caidence Oakley, Jayden Wile and soon to arrive Daegon Oakley; sister, Hazel (Lorne Clark), British Columbia; several nieces and nephews. Stuart was predeceased by brothers Cecil, Fred, and sisters Violet and Betty. BARRON, William “Bill” - 61, passed away suddenly at his home in Onslow on November 12, 2009. Born on February 18, 1948 in Welland, Ontario, Bill worked for 27 years in the N.S. Department of Natural Resources, and helped build the province’s Forest Inventory. He was deeply devoted to his family and will be missed by Carol, his loving wife of 38 years, son Stephen, daughter-in-law Kelly, and granddaughter Emma; son Sandy and his partner Sonia; and son Matt and daughter-in-law Tess. He is also survived by his mother Ida; sister, Judy Sparling and brother-in-law Les; brother Paul and sister-in-law Anne; mother-in-law, June Saunders; sister-in-law, Beth A longtime leader in the scouting movement, Bill devoted his retirement years to his talent for woodworking. Memorial service was held November 19 in St. James Presbyterian Church, Truro with Rev. Dr. Brian Ross officiating. UPHAM, Hazel Pearl, 86, of Townsview Estates, Truro, formerly of Masstown, passed away on Monday, November 16, 2009, at the Townsview residence. Born in Wentworth, Hazel was the daughter of the late Leonard and Ada (Totten) McGill. Hazel moved to Truro at 16 and worked in the mills until meeting her husband a few years later. Hazel is survived by daughter, Gerri Otterson, Truro; son, Richard (Jane) Upham, Truro; foster son, Stephen Clarke, Masstown; sisters, Florence Harnish, Wentworth; Daisy Taggart, Onslow; brother, Lloyd (Roxie) McGill, Alberta; grandchildren, Kari (Louie) Velocci, Halifax, Alicia MacMillan, Truro, George (Fauna) Osborne, Texas, Amanda Upham, Marty (Jen) Upham, Nicholas Upham, Truro, Tyler and Chantel Clarke, Fredericton, Amy Curry, Truro; great-grandsons, Matthew and Daniel Velocci, Connor Whooten; great-granddaughters, Britany Martin and Jacqueline Upham; Hazel also leaves her faithful companion, Harold Glawson; several nieces and nephews. HUMPHREYS, Gordon Stuart (“Stu”, Grampa), 75 of Trenton passed away peacefully with his family by his side at his “home away from home” Glen Haven Manor in New Glasgow on September 17th, 2009. Stuart was born in New Glasgow, the son of the late Elmer and Charlotte (Leadbetter) Humphreys of Trenton. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-two years Doreen (Johnson), cherished daughter Carolyn, son-in-law Steven, dearly loved grandchildren Benjamin, Daniel, Helene (Baldwin), and sister Gloria, brother-in-law Ross, nephews David, Kevin, Robert (Ingram), Stephen (Johnson), Gordon Fisher; nieces Kathy (Bond) and Linda Lee (Ingram), Helen Funk; cousins Wally, Gary, and Jimmy (Humphreys). Stuart and his wife enjoyed many summers at their summer home in Upper Economy. He loved music and was a beautiful singer. Stuart graduated from Dalhousie University with a BSc. and was registered as a certified dispenser with the Nova Scotia Pharmaceutical Society. He practiced his profession at Lawtons in Halifax, as well as Ormond’s in New Glasgow, and then for many years with his father and Donald MacDonald at Steeltown Pharmacy in Trenton. DODSWORTH, Eunice Mollie, 89, of Truro, passed away Friday September 18th, 2009 in Wynn Park Villa, Truro. Born in Dunston, England, to the late John and Ida (Briggs) Walton, she moved to Canada in 1943 as a war bride, spending most of her life in Old Barns and Great Village. She is survived by her sons, Roger, Ontario and Jim, Great Village; daughters Christine Landry, Truro and Katherine Downing (Ron), Bible Hill; sixteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren as well as her brother, Roger Walton (Australia) and sisters Elsie Shepherd and Joan Weighill, both from England. She was predeceased by her husband William Burpee Dodsworth and son Peter, and also by two of her sisters, Ida (Nellie) Parker and Millie MacLeod. OOSTEROM, Maria Janna - 73, Truro, passed away peacefully October 2, 2009 at home surrounded by her family after a long battle with Parkinsons and dementia. Born June 14, 1936 in Leiderdorp, the Netherlands, she was a daughter of the late Leendert and Gysberta (Weynen) Baars. Maria came to Canada as a new bride in 1957 landing at Pier 21, Halifax and then making her home in Onslow, Colchester Co. She was a homemaker and with her husband, Bert they owned and operated Graceland Farms in Onslow retiring in 1992. Maria is survived by her husband of fifty-two years, Bert; son, Harry (Ann), Bible Hill; daughters, Christina (Ralph) Workman, Helena (Brian) Bell, both of Calgary; daughter-in-law, Laura, Hilden; grandchildren, Steven, Jessica, Mitchell, Travis, Alexana; brother, Leo (Riet), the Netherlands; sister, Janna (Leen), the Netherlands. COLPITTS, Dara Millard – 60, Debert. It is with heavy hearts that the family announce the passing of Dara Colpitts on October 4, 2009 in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro, surrounded by his family, friends, and special friend, Lauchie Rector. Dara was born on August 4, 1949 in Parrsboro to the late Aubrey and Kathleen Colpitts. He is survived by his siblings, Sylvia (Wayne) Boyd, Glenholme, Debbie (Glenn) Buchanan, East Village, Wayne, Windsor, Ont., Betty, Halifax, Marilyn Elderton, Connecticut; several nieces and nephews. WELTON, Sandra - 67, Economy. It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Sandra Welton on Sunday, October 11, 2009 at home. She was born in Toronto, Ontario on April 9, 1942. She moved to Economy in 1982 and with her husband Ralph, built a home and a business. She was a very hard worker and devoted much of her time to the betterment of the community. She always opened her home and her heart to anyone who needed it, including countless dogs, cats, birds, squirrels and other animals. She bravely battled against cancer for six years and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her loving husband, Ralph; sons, Douglas, Robert and Brian; sisters, Cynthia, Sharon, Bonnie; sister-in-law, Patricia; many nieces and nephews. RUSHTON, Grace Eileen – 88, Truro passed away October 20, 2009 at home. Born in Denmark, she was a daughter of the late James and Stella (Watt) Hayman. She was a member of the North River Choir. In later years she enjoyed the senior activities that involved dancing and she often played the keyboard. Grace loved to sing with her brother Arthur at various events from childhood until the present. Her greatest loves were grandchildren, children and music. She is survived by daughter, Linda (Lawrence) Lynds, Great Village; son, Ronald (Brenda) Higgins, Mt. RIX, Dr. Robert Glenn - The Rix family sadly announces the tragic death of Dr. Robert Glenn Rix of Bible Hill on September 7, 2009 as the result of an ATV accident in Salt Springs, Pictou County. Bob was born in Halifax on July 29, 1948, the youngest son of the late Everett and Leone (Arbing) Rix. Bob graduated from Prince Andrew High School, Dartmouth, in 1967 and from Dalhousie University Dental School in 1974. He practiced in Musquodoboit Harbour, Tatamagouche and Winsloe, PEI, prior to opening his own dental practice in Bible Hill. He took a great interest in his profession and knew the family trees of most of his patients and will be fondly remembered by everyone for his excellent dentistry, story-telling, knowledge of American History, love of gardening, tinkering with mechanical items, love of nature and his family. Bob is survived by his wife, Paula (Royal); daughter, Rachel; son Robert “Robbie”. He is also survived by sister, Betty Ballard, Oshawa, Ont.; brothers, Donald (Betty), Lawrencetown, Eric (Sandra), Cole Harbour, Ralph (Jackie), Bible Hill; sister-in-law, Linda Rix, Mineville; several nieces and nephews. Mitchell, Dr. Calvin “Ross” – 1928-2009, dearly beloved husband and father, Ross Mitchell passed away on September 10, 2009 in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born in Truro, he was a son of the late Robert and Margaret (Archibald) Mitchell. Ross was a graduate of the class of 1950 of the University of Toronto. He then joined his father’s practice as an Optometrist and loved his work for nearly 60 years. Equally well known for his athletic pursuits, he won numerous Canadian Championships, including setting several Canadian records in Masters Track & Field. In 1995 he won a bronze medal at the World Masters Track & Field Championships. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Faye (Higgins); his sons, David and Paul; daughters; Margaret and Rebecca; 6 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. CROWE, Robert Thomas “Bob”, 78, Truro. It is with great sadness that the family announces the sudden passing of Robert Thomas Crowe on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Robert was born in Truro on August 16, 1931 and was a son of the late Marvin and Ursula Mae (Spencer) Crowe. Bob was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He retired in 1991 after 41 years in the tire business with Andy’s Tire. Bob led a very active life and shared a love for dancing and music with his wife, Phyllis. Bob was also a very creative “Mr. Fix-it” who could repair or build most anything. A devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he will be missed and remembered by his wife and best friend of 38 years, Phyllis (Wellwood); son, Kim; daughter, Gail Purdy; stepdaughters, Brenda (Charles Brown), Lynn (Gordie Colpitts), all of Truro; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren. HOLLIS, Frances Margaret “Fannie” - 75, Bass River passed away with her family by her side on Monday, August 10, 2009 in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born in Bass River, she was a daughter of the late Lester and Willena (Ellis) Carde and devoted wife of the late Earl Hollis. Fannie loved music, cooking, knitting and having visitors along with playing great card games. She loved telling jokes to family and friends. She is survived by sisters, Marie McElhinney, Lower Debert, Doreen (Glenn) Putnam, Masstown; brother, James Carde, Bass River; sister-in-law, Hilda Hollis, Oxford; nieces, Patti, Gail, Katherine, Jennifer; nephews, Donald, Brandon, Jamie; special cousin, Shirley; numerous relatives and close friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Earl in 2007; sister, Joyce and brother Leo; brother-in-law, Arthur McElhinney. ROODE, Charles “Elmer” – 76, Truro, passed away peacefully with his wife by his side on August 17, 2009 in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. Born in Belmont, he was the son of the late Robert and Geneva (Otterson) Roode. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Elmer worked for nearly 30 years as a “sawyer” for Brookfield Lumber. He is survived by his wife Dorothy (Higgins); daughter Joy (Reg) Peters, Enfield; grandchildren Daniel and Alex Peters; several nieces and nephews. Born in Central Onslow on August 16, 1923, he was the son of the late George and Eva (McCurdy) Hill. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Leta (Lorraine); infant son, Nelson Hugh; brother, Edward (Ted). GIRARD, Robin Rene – 50, Oxford, formerly of Truro and Glenholme, passed away Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at home. FREDERICKS, Gloria Doris, 58, Masstown, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 17, 2009 surrounded by her family in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Lester and Ellen Beck. Gloria was the “breakfast lady” at the Comfort Inn, Truro for many years. She enjoyed gardening, especially tending her flowers and spending time with her family. Gloria was given the special name “Makin” by grandchildren, Michael and Jocelin. She was famous for her Boxing Day and July 1st family get-togethers which were filled with laughter and her great cooking. Gloria will be greatly missed by her family, friends and all who knew her. LORETTE, Roy E. – 82, of Rockingham, and formerly of Parrsboro passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born in Shubenacadie, he was a son of the late Frederick and Emelda (Babineau) Lorette. At the age of 18, Roy joined the army in 1945. Following the war, he reenlisted in the navy in 1948 where he served until 1974. Following his military career, he was employed with the Lord Nelson Hotel in Halifax for more than 10 years. He was a 4th Degree Knight’s of Columbus member and was an active legion member, most recently with Legion Branch #45, Parrsboro. He is survived by sisters, Freda Adams, Five Islands; Joyce Myers, Lower Sackville; Lorena Parsons (Leon), Parrsboro; brother, Fred (Jackie), Stewiacke; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Lester and Joseph in infancy, Valerie, Bill. Funeral service was held May 22, 2009 at Saint Brigid’s Catholic Church, Parrsboro, with Father David MacDonald officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. RANKOUSSY, Betty (MacPhee) - 89, Central Onslow, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Thursday, March 26, 2009 in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born October 28, 1919 in Bourkes, Ontario, she was a daughter of the late Ole and Gudrun Carlson. Betty and her second husband, Joseph “Joe”, owned and operated Joe’s Restaurant on Waddell Street for many years. The last surviving member of her immediate family, Betty is survived by her son, Kenneth C. “Ken” (Judith) MacPhee, Lower Sackville; daughters, Carol MacPhee, Central Onslow; Sharon MacPhee, Truro; grandchildren, Gregory MacPhee, Kimberly Theodis, David and Cindy Landry, Lorraine Crowe, Connie Martin, Matthew and Marla MacPhee and Tara Burke; 14 great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren. LANGILLE, Marjorie Gladys, Truro died peacefully in her 98th year at home on March 30, 2009 in the arms of one of her beloved caregivers, Betty Snow. She was born and raised on the family farm on Church Street, Port Williams and following her marriage to Frederick H. Langille resided in Halifax and later in Truro. Marjorie was predeceased by her husband, Frederick; her brother, Robie Kidston (Edith); her parents, Owen Kidston and Evangeline (Boyle) Kidston. She is survived by her children, Patricia Newcombe (John), Donald Langille (Cheryl) and Kenneth Langille (Isabel); her nephews, Earl, Robert and Neil Kidston and niece, Margaret Brown; eight grandchildren, Ian Newcombe, Scott Newcombe, Bruce Newcombe, Lesley Bauer, Amy Davis, Janet Charlton, Robert Langille and David Langille; eight great grandchildren. Marjorie was an active member of the First United Church, Truro. She spent most of her summers at her cottage at Spencer’s Point, Colchester County and many enjoyable winters in their home in Florida. Funeral service was held on April 4 with Mr. Leland H. SPENCER, William Ernest (WO Retired) (Bill), 74, Truro, passed away surrounded by song and his loving family on Tuesday, April 14 in Colchester Regional Hospital. Bill was born on June 13, 1934 at Edam, Saskatchewan and was the son of the late Sterling and Kathleen (Nelson) Spencer. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Jenny (nee O’Connor); daughters Sandy (Doug) Graves and Patricia (Jim) Yorke; daughter-in-law Duane Spencer-Lowe; grandchildren Christopher, Samantha, Celia, Mark, Nicole, Chrissy, Jim, Amanda, Liam and Michael; brothers Jack, Stewart (Corinne), Ralph and sister Linda (Lorne) Hyde. He was predeceased by his parents; brother Lloyd; sister Lenore; and son Timothy William. Bill served 28 years in the Canadian Armed Forces. On retirement from the forces, Bill became the Executive Director of the Colchester Big Brothers/Big Sisters Association in Truro, and then was the founding Executive Director of the Cobequid Neighbourhood Work Activity Program (FutureWorx). He was a member of the Truro Kiwanis Club for many years. In recent years, he and Jenny enjoyed spending their summers with their daughter Trish, her family and their many friends at Hidden Hilltop Family Campground where Bill took pride in being known as “Whipper Willy”. LORRAINE, Lloyd - 84, Truro, passed away April 16, 2009 in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born in Onslow, June 22, 1924, he was the son of the late Purley and Clara (Graham) Lorraine. Lloyd was a gentleman who was proud of his family and had a quiet, beautiful heart and personality. Lloyd is survived by his sister, Annie Mary Haughn, Halifax; brother-in-law, Charles Reid Hill; sisters-in-law, Margaret Lorraine, Shirley Lorraine; numerous nieces and nephews and special grand nephews, Grant and Ross Van Zeumeren. He was predeceased by sisters, Florence Nightingale Johnson, Leta Gertrude Hill; brothers, Hector Murray, James Alexander, Laurie Wilfred, Edward Francis; brothers-in-law, Lester Irving (Florence) Johnson, Quentin (Annie) Haughn; and wonderful travelling companion, Dr. Ross Main with whom he travelled the world. The family would like to thank the following people for their compassion and kindness on Lloyd’s behalf – Margie Johnson, Shelia Richards, Rev.
