HENRY,
Robert G. – 72, Brookfield, passed away March 29, 2010 in Colchester
Regional Hospital, Truro. Born in Colchester County, he was a son of the
late Daniel and Ada (Rudolph) Henry. Robert was self employed and owned and
operated R.G. Henry Trucking for over 20 years. Robert was dearly loved and
will be sadly missed by his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 47
years, Shirley (MacLeod); daughters, Ruth Henry (Ian McNutt), Debert,
Carolyn (Wade) Johnson, Stewiacke, Angela (Jeff) Cameron, Belmont; son,
Daniel (Lisa) Henry, Brentwood; grandchildren, Jennifer Henry, Thomas and
Kyle Henry, Samantha and Justin McNutt, Robert Cameron; great-grandchildren,
Gage and Devon; sister, Hilda Jackson, Ontario; brother, Graham Henry,
Hilden. He was predeceased by grandson, Andrew Ryan Henry; sister, Audrey
Isenor. A memorial service was held April 1 with Rev. Larry Harrison

SOY, Bernard Eugene – 84, Bible Hill/Halifax, passed away at Melville
Gardens on April 7, 2010. Born in Londonderry Station, N.S. on April 4,
1926, he was a son of the late James Soy, M.C. and G. Magnolia (Toole) Soy.
He attended Mt. Allison University and Maritime Forest Ranger School. His
entire working life was spent in the forestry business, including co-owner
and Vice-President of McCully & Soy Ltd. He was a member of the Royal
Canadian Legion Branch 26 and attended many legion dances through the years.
Special thanks to the wonderful staff at Melville Gardens, whom he often
referred to as his “angels”. They all provided care, compassion and
friendship. He will be dearly missed by his daughter, Valerie Soy (Doug
Grover) of Dartmouth, son, Kevin (Kim) of Toronto, cherished Grandson,
Samuel Grover, sisters, Margaret Soy (David) of Ottawa, Mary Spence of Bible
Hill, many nieces and nephews, sisters-in-law, Judy Soy of Bible Hill and
Margo Soy of Saskatoon. He was predeceased by his wife Ann Rachel, sister,
Kathleen MacNeil and brothers, James R. and Richard Cornelius “Con”. Funeral
Mass was held Monday, April 12 in Immaculate Conception Church, 669 Prince
Street, Truro, with Father Dariusz Miskowicz officiating. Burial to take

DAVIS, Lynda L. - 62, of Lower Five Islands, Colchester County passed
away Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born in
Mosher River, she was a daughter of the late Ernie and Gladys (Jones)
Bezanson. Lynda was very active in her community, particularly through her
work as President of the Five Islands Bazaar Committee. She was well known
throughout the area for her baking and crafts. Besides operating ‘Special
Touch’ from her home, she operated Davis Video in Parrsboro for more than 10
years. The time she enjoyed most was spent with her family, particularly her
grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Basil (Jr.); a daughter,
Shauna Allen (Gordon), Greenfield; a son Terry (Mary Lou), Bible Hill; a
sister, Edna Miller (John), Dartmouth; foster brothers, Elmer MacDonald,
Mosher River and Perry MacDonald (Linda), Dartmouth; grandchildren, Jessica
Allen; Julia, Brady and Noah Davis. She was predeceased by an infant
brother, Terrance Maxwell; foster brother, Frank MacDonald; a grandson,
Tyler. Funeral service was held April 17, 2010 at the Peniel United Church,
Five Islands, with Rev. Florence Antle-Brison officiating. Memorial

McNutt, Cecil Henry - 80, Truro, passed away Sunday April 18, 2010 at
the QEII Health Sciences Center, Halifax. Born in Brookside, he was the son
of the late Noble and Winnifred (Isenor) McNutt. He loved gardening, puzzles
and walking and enjoyed family and family gatherings. He was always
available when needed by his family. He was a “jack-of-all-trades”,
especially carpentry. He enjoyed the simple things of life. He will be
deeply missed by his family. He is survived by daughters, Carolyn (Tony)
Thurlow, Sharon (Clinton) Hayter, both of Truro; sons, Eric (Tammy), Onslow
Mountain, Terry, Dale (Tanya) both of Truro; grandchildren, Stephanie,
Jason, Crystal, Ryan, Amanda; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Florence
(Angus) MacAdam, Grace Cowl, Frances Caddell, Lillian Pratt, Hazel (Donald)
Hatt; brother, Alden (Evelyn); several nieces and nephews. He was
predeceased by brothers, Gordon, Chester and Russell; niece, Glenda Hatt.

COOK,
George Alfred "Geordie" - 74, Truro, passed away peacefully Saturday,
February 20, 2010, in the QEII Health Science Centre, VG Site, Halifax,
after a brief battle with cancer. Born in Great Village, he was the son of
the late James and Laura (Duncan) Cook. George lived most of his life in
Great Village and worked most of his life as a mechanic. He formerly worked
for Good Speeds, Truro and later started his own business in Great Village
where he worked until his retirement. He is survived by his wife Greta (Welton)
Cook; sons, George (Patricia Nicholson) Hilden, John (Anita Dunlap) Belmont,
James and Robert; daughter Maureen Ralph (Kelly Blair) Truro Carol
Ann; sisters Mrs. Bernice Kaulback, Great Village, Mrs. Eva France,
Wentworth; brother-in-law Ralph Welton, Economy; numerous grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother Arthur; step-son Robert
Mattix. By George’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral service.

JENNEX, Gerald Reginald “Chinker” - 78, Masstown. It is with deep
sadness Gerald’s family announce his sudden passing on Sunday, February 21,
2010, at his home. Born September 4, 1931, in Halifax, he was a son of the
late Frank and Gertrude (Mitchell) Jennex. Gerald is survived by his wife of
39 years, Evelyn (Chaulk); step-daughter, Sally Higgins (Russell Jennings),
Crowes Mills; step-son, Lawrence Weatherby, Mississauga, Ontario;
step-grandchildren, Terri-Lynn Weatherby, Cindy Spencer-Fagioli, Margo Marie
Rogers, all of Truro; five great grandchildren; sisters, Gladys Marion
Louise (Thomas) Smith, Hearts Delight, Newfoundland; Shirley Anne Marie
Robillard, Woodstock, Ontario; numerous nieces and nephews. Along with his

GAMBLE, Ralph Burton (Sam), Economy - With great sadness the family of
Ralph Burton Gamble, age 84, announce his passing at Williams Country Home,
Hilden, March 3, 2010. Born in Bass River, March 8, 1925, he was the son of
the late Ethel Meekins Elliott and Russell Gamble. He is survived by the

HOUSE, Miriam Olive “Buck” (Frizzell), 78, Truro passed away March 4,
2010 in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born in Truro, she was a
daughter of the late Forman and Tina (Cantelo) Frizzell. She was employed by
Brookfield Creamery for a number of years. She is survived by sister,
Florence “Toots” (Jimmy) May, Onslow; brothers, Forman Jr. “Bo”,
Scarborough, ON, Marshall (Norma), Bible Hill, Michael “Mick” (Susan
Kennedy), North River; husband, John, Truro; several nieces and nephews. She
was predeceased by brothers, Harold “Duck”, Vernon and John in infancy.
Funeral service was held March 8 in Colchester Community Funeral Home, with
Capt. Stephen McNeilly officiating. Spring interment in Terrace Hill
Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations in her memory may be made to the

TOTTEN, Raymond Howard – 59, Bible Hill. It is with great sorrow and
sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Raymond Totten, on March 19,
2010. Born in Truro he was the son of Claude and the late Iris (Graves)
Totten. He is survived by his beloved daughter, Jill (J.P.) Girard and
granddaughter, Lila Girard, whom he loved very much. He is also survived by
his sisters; Elaine (Gerald) Stevens, Lower Onslow, Brenda (John) Webster,
Truro, Valerie, Truro, Shelley (Paul) McLeod, Onslow Mt.; brothers, Brian,
Onslow Mt., Kevin (Suzanne), Truro; Stepmother, Estelle Totten; several
nieces and nephews. Raymond spent most of his career working at the Ford
dealership in Truro and was most recently employed with Colchester Co-Op
until its closing. In his younger years, Raymond enjoyed playing
hockey, but later in life golf and curling were his sports of choice.
Raymond enjoyed playing harmonica at the jam sessions in Debert and the
Truro Raceway and volunteering at the food bank. A Memorial service was held
March 25 at Colchester Community Funeral Home with Rev. Lori Ramsey

MAY, James Frederick “Jim” - 85, Lower Onslow. It is with great
sadness that we wish to announce the sudden passing of James May on Sunday,
March 14, 2010. Born August 9, 1924 in Chatham, NB, he was a son of the late
Richard and Sarah (Eva) May. Jimmy was a proud member of the West Nova
Scotia Regiment and a dedicated member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch
26. He joined the army at the young age of 16 and served for almost 5 years.
Jim was a retired carpenter having worked for the C.N. Railway for 34 years.
He was a generous man always making his family his first priority. He will
be remembered for his kind heart and sense of humor. He was the last
surviving member of his immediate family, predeceased by sisters, Helen
Comeau, Marie Landers; brothers, Matthew, George, Ernest, Joseph and
Bernard. Jimmy is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Florence “Toots”
(Frizzell); his only child, Greg whom he adored; his two treasures in life,
his grandchildren, Matthew and Jessica. A Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 26
Tribute Service on Tuesday, March 16th. Funeral Mass was held March 17 with
Father Dariusz Miskowicz as Celebrant. Donations may be made to St. Vincent
DePaul Society, Kanes Kitchen or the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 26

COULTER, Elmer Ira - 80, Debert, formerly of Dieppe, New Brunswick,
passed away peacefully, Sunday morning, March 14, 2010, in Colchester
Regional Hospital, Truro. Born February 25, 1930, in Six Mile Road, Wallace,
NS, he was the son of the late Ira and Ethel (Crooks) Coulter. Surviving are
his wife of 49 years, Norma (Haywood Lewis); his children, Willard
(Carolyn), Cascumpec, PEI; Garth (Joanne), Dieppe, NB, Sandra McLaren
(Randy), Wilmot, NS; David, Fort Saskatchewan, AB; Karen Tulkens (Mike),
Bridgewater, NS; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. Along with his
parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Freda DeYoung (Malcolm). Funeral
service was held 1 p.m., Wednesday, March 17, 2010, in Mattatall ~ Varner

SAUNDERS, Ronald “Sach” Douglas - 55, Bible Hill passed away March
15, 2010 with his wife Corena (McNeil) by his side. Born in Halifax, he was
a son of the late Herbert and Frances (Knickle) Saunders. He will be sadly
missed by “always Daddy’s girl”, daughter Amy; son-in-law, Michael McClure;
special godchildren, Mya Luddington, Thomas Julien; twin brother, Donnie,
Bible Hill and brothers, Lee, Toronto, Ken (Diane), Sydney, Stephen

GLOADE,
Muriel Claire (August 16, 1952-2010) – Millbrook; The Sylliboy family is
announcing the passing of family matriarch, Muriel Claire Gloade on January
24, 2010 of natural causes. Muriel was 57 years old and resided on the
Millbrook First Nation, Truro, NS and died in the comfort of her family
home. Muriel, a craftsperson and renowned traditional food maker, was a
member of the Millbrook Sacred Heart Church. Muriel was born in Sydney, NS
and originally resided in Eskasoni First Nation and is predeceased by her
parents, John Simon Denny, Eskasoni First Nation and Rita (Prosper) Denny,
Potlotek First Nation. She was predeceased by brother Lester Denny, sisters
Eleanor Denny (Bernard), Wilfred, Clara, Muriel and step-mother, Florence
(Johnson) Denny and step brother Anthony Sylliboy. Muriel is survived by
siblings Joseph H. Denny, Robert C. Denny, Gail Stevens, Pamela Doucette all
of Eskasoni FN, Beverly MacDonald (QC), Bernadette Gloade, Marlene Denny,
Shirley Denny (Millbrook) and step-sister, Elizabeth Bernard, Waycobah FN.
Muriel was the proud mother of ten children, John (Darrin), Mary (Gabriel),
Alfred, Dana, Noreen (Gerald), Frank (Megan), Corrina Milliea (Randy), Leo,
Buck (Yvette) and Ross (Tara), step daughter, Bernice Johnson, Wagmatcook
FN, and the grandmother of 28 grandchildren of which more are expected. She
also had 10 godchildren. Mrs. She was predeceased by former husband Alfred
Sylliboy, Eskasoni FN and husband, Daniel Gloade, Millbrook FN. Funeral mass
was held January 28, 2010 awith Father Darius officiating at the Millbrook

FRENCH, Herbert William “Bert” – 102, Truro and Lakeview. Passed away
on February 8th, 2010 at the Halifax Infirmary. Born in Toronto on November
3, 1907, he moved to Truro in 1929. He is survived by his loving wife of 70
years, the former Luta Elaine Patriquin, Lakeview, daughters Phyllis (Paul
MacKay) Lakeview, Brenda Moore (late Soley Lynds), North River, beloved
grandchildren Shawn (Derek Webb) Debert, Evan MacKay (Annette) Dieppe, Kerry
Moore (Kimberley) Bible Hill, great grandchildren Brittani and Ashley Moore,
Emily and Lucas Webb, step- great grandchildren Sarah Morin, Moncton and
Mark Logan (Veronique) Dieppe, great great grandson Kaiden Moore, step-
great great grandchildren Corbin and Adah Morin, Addison and Aislyn Logan,
several nephews and nieces including Douglas Phillips (Linda) Lindsay (Ont),
Ronald French (Cynthia Askwith) Markham (Ont), Nancy (Richard MacEachin) (Ont).
Bert was predeceased by his parents, Thomas Edward French and Annie Pearl
Pocock (his adored Mum) (who he adored), both UK immigrants, brothers and
their wives John (Irene), Franklin (Maisie), Norman (Bernice), sisters Anne
(Roddis Phillips),Phyllis Phillipa French, niece Susan Phillips Oliver, and
golfing chum Louis MacKay. Bert began his golfing career in Toronto at age 9
as a caddy and then became an assistant to the Golf Pro, which included
handcrafting wooden wooden golf clubs. He accepted a position as Pro with
the Truro Golf Club in 1929 when he moved to Nova Scotia. He worked there
until just prior to WWII when the Club was all but closed. Bert also managed
the lanes at the Truro Bowling Alley in the winter and played in leagues for
many years. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff in the Cobequid
and Infirmary Emergency departments, Dr. Christian Wiems and nurses Sharon
and Elizabeth on ward 8.2 at the Infirmary for their care and concern, also

PATRIQUIN, Ethel “Jean” - 87, Londonderry, passed away February 13, 2010
at home surrounded by her family. Born in East Village, she was a daughter
of the late James and Elsie (Roblee) Robinson. Jean was a very loving wife,
mother, grandmother and friend who loved to cook and bake for her family’s
daily needs. In later years she was often remembered for her many quotes and
sayings. Jean is survived by children, Robert (Hazel), Barbara (Beverley)
Potter, Carl, Beverly Rideout, Roy, Ida Rodgers; eleven grandchildren;
thirteen great-grandchildren; sisters, Muriel Spencer, Laura (Fred)
MacKinnon, Louise Wedge; brothers, Ernie (Gerene) Robinson. She was
predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Johnnie; brothers, Whitman and
Aubrey. Extra special thanks to the VON and Home Care for their loving care
of our mother. Cremation has already taken place. No visitation by request.

NOLAN, Ronald Arden “Sooty” - 74, North River passed away February
15, 2010 in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born in Glenholme, he was a
son of the late Elva Brown. He owned and operated Ron’s Burner Service for
33 years. Ron was a member of the North River & District Fire Brigade. He
was a kind and caring person who would do almost anything for someone in
need. His greatest treasures were his family and friends. He is survived by
his wife, Betty (Leamont); daughters, Judi (John) Spicer, Bahrain, Rhonda
Dunn (Jeff Lewis) North River; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Stephen;
sisters, Pat Spence (Lyle), Great Village, Sally (Bill) Cruikshank; brother,
Michael (Joyce) Brown, River John, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was
predeceased by sisters, Peggy (Margaret), Karen; brother, Gary. No
visitation by request. A North River & District Fire Brigade Tribute was
held Thursday, February 18th followed by a memorial service, with Rev.

WELTON, James Donald Donnie , 78, of Economy, passed away suddenly
Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at home. Born in Pleasant Hills, Colchester
County, he was a son of the late James and Jennie (Kennie) Welton. Donnie is
survived by his wife, the former Ada Alice Marsh; daughter, Cyndi Welton,
Dartmouth; sons, Ron (Debbie), Bass River; Kevin (Margaret), Economy;

MOWBRAY, Dr. Glen Vincent MacFarlane “Mac” 77, The Mira Long Term
Care Centre, Truro, passed away peacefully Sunday, December 27, 2009. Born
October 24, 1932, in Northwood, England, he was a son of the late James and
Ethel (Taylor) Mowbray. Mac graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College (Guelph
University) in 1960 and went on to be a respected large and small animal
veterinarian working out of Truro and Stellarton. Mac is survived by his
loving wife of 30 years, Arlene Marie (Hardy); children, Gwendolyn (Gwen)
Mowbray-Cashen (Chris Cashen), Truro; Frances (Fran) Mowbray (Luiz Mello),
St. John’s, Newfoundland; Juanita (Wayne) Powell, Truro; William Bill ,
Montreal; grandchildren, Tara and Quinn Cashen, Neeson and Erik Mello,

DOWNING, SSM CD, Laurie Freestone, 78, Economy, NS passed away
peacefully at the Veteran’s Memorial Building (Camp Hill) on Sunday, January
3, 2010. Laurie is survived by his sons, Stewart (Lynne) and Murray;
grandchildren, Jason, Sara, Ashley, Christina and Great-Grand Daughter
Aaliyah. His grandchildren will greatly miss their Grampie , especially his
grandson Jason who currently serving his country in Afghanistan in the same
tradition as his grandfather. Born in Halifax, NS, April 3rd, 1931, he was a
son of the late Roy and Margaret (Dymond) Downing. Besides his parents, he
was predeceased by the love of his life and reason for living, Virginia, his
wife of 50 years. He was likewise predeceased by brother, Burrell Downing
and sister Alicia Colpitts whom he greatly missed. Memorial service was held

COLLIER, Vera Louise - 79, Truro, passed away on January 4, 2010 in
Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro surrounded by her loving family after a
brief illness. Born January 31, 1930 in Springhill, she was a daughter of
the late Charles and Hattie (Embree) Harrison. She left Springhill at a
young age to seek her fortune in Truro. Here she met her future husband,
Bill Collier and created a wonderful blended family. Vera worked for many
years at the Colchester Regional Hospital as a nurse’s aide retiring to her
little home in Bible Hill. Vera is survived by sons, Bob Harrison (Sylvia),
Halifax; George Collier (Jean), Lower Sackville; daughter, Betty Johnston,
Onslow; sister, Alta Fear, Dartmouth; brothers, James Harrison (Emily) and
Carman Harrison (Freda), both of Ontario; grandchildren, Darren Casey,
Andrew Cameron (Carman), Dennis (Crystal), Bill, Allan and Paul Harrison,
Mary-Beth (Dean) Fancy, Glenn Collier, Curtis (Lynn) Johnston and
granddaughter Lynn Johnston; seven great-grandchildren; a number of nieces

PICTOU, Audrey Ann - 67, Millbrook First Nations, finished her
journey on this earth on January 6, 2010 and was escorted to heaven by her
Guardian Angel. Audrey passed away at Cedarstone Enhanced Care Nursing Home
where she was loved by all the staff and was treated with great respect.
Audrey was a member of Millbrook First Nations and was a Shubenacadie
Residential School Survivor. The family thanks all the staff at the nursing
home and Dr. Barrry Wheeler. She is survived by her brother, Robert Leonard
Pictou, Millbrook; special cousin, Billy Pictou, Debert; her guardian and
cousin, Clara Gloade, Millbrook. She was predeceased by mother, Bella Pictou

MINGO, Vivian Janet, Truro. Shortly after lunch on January 13, 2010,
Vivian Janet Mingo was called home to walk hand in hand with Jesus Christ.
Vivian was a daughter of the late Walter and Dorothy (Hamilton) Clyke.
Vivian loved and supported her church (Zion United Baptist Church) and
helped wherever she could. She was also a member of the Colchester Regional

JOHNSON, David W. - 67, Truro passed away January 14, 2010 at home.
Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late David A. and Gladys (MacLean)
Johnson. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte (Doyle); sister, Cheryl

years, later purchasing the business along with McCulloch-Patriquin Funeral
Home in Great Village. After selling these businesses, he worked with

THOMPSON, James “Jim” Ernest, 62, Great Village, NS. It is with great
sadness that we announce the passing of James Ernest Thompson. Born in
Ontario, June 15, 1947, he was a son of the late Violet Giles and William
Thompson. James drove tractor trailers all his life, it was a job he loved
and enjoyed doing. He proudly drove for Big Wheels, Centrans, Warrens, SLH,
Western Perishables, and most recently D&D Transport. James' heart and soul
was his family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 22 years, Juliette
Thompson (Wellwood); 3 loving daughters, Nicole Thompson, Rachel Larue,
Amanda Metlin; loving son, Tim Metlin; grandchildren, Austin and one on the
way, Tenielle, Bradley, Dakota, Gavin and Ransom; and brother to Ron and

CHESTNUT, Agnes Ruth – 86, Truro, Chestnut, Agnes Ruth – 86, Truro,
passed away peacefully on January 23, 2010 in Wynn Park Villa, with family
members at her side. Born on June 21, 1923 in Boston, Mass., Agnes was a
daughter of the late Henry and Ruth Cole of Tatamagouche. Agnes spent her
adult years as a very busy mother of ten children. She also enjoyed being
grammie to her many grand and great-grandchildren. She loved celebrating all
the events, both big and small in her large families lives. She eagerly
awaited each new addition to her ever-increasing family. She spent the last
few years in East Cumberland Lodge, Pugwash, and Wynn Park Villa, Truro.
Here she was treated with respect and kindness by the many caring staff
members. Agnes is survived by nine children, Arnold (Sally), Kingston,

January 22, 2010. Born in Masstown, she was a daughter of the late Leo and
Winnifred (Smith) Leben. Joan loved many activities, including dancing with
Roy, quilting, puzzles, and knitting, having knit many newborn hats for the
Colchester Regional Hospital nursery. Joan also was the owner of Rainbow

Howard Allison – 79, Debert. It is with great sadness we announce the
passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend at his home
on Tuesday, Oct 13 after a brave and courageous battle with cancer. His
family and loyal dog, Molly, were by his side. A lifetime resident of Debert,
Howard was the youngest son of the late Altie and Helen Geldart. A heavy
equipment operator his entire career, Howard worked at Tidewater
Construction, Scot Truck and later ran his own business, H.A. Geldart
Backhoe, until his retirement. Howard enjoyed camping and traveling with his
family and friends, as well as meeting new people. He had a zest for fixing
things, being in his garage and socializing over morning coffee with his
friends.
Howard is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Elva; children Bob
(Gayle), Ellershouse; Shelley (Gordon) Hannam, Debert; and Scott (Janet),
Debert; his grandchildren Robin Hannam, Alisha (Josh) Johnson, Hana, Emma
and Lukas Geldart, who were his pride and joy; sister Marilyn MacLean,
Maine. He was preceded by his brothers, Rettie and Frank and two sisters in
infancy. Howard’s quick wit and humor will be sadly missed by all of his
family and friends.
The family wishes to express a heart felt thank you to Dr. David Henderson
and Lisa Wilson, Palliative Care, as well as the VON nurses for the
exceptional care they provided to Howard.
