WHEELER, Dr. Barry Reid – Age 89, Truro. On October 11th, 2020, Dr. Barry Reid Wheeler passed away peacefully in the Colchester East Hants Health Center’s palliative care unit in Truro, Nova Scotia. He was 89 years old. He is survived by his wife, Pat; his five children, Jennie, Guy, David, Tony and Suzanne and 35 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Barry was born in 1931 in England and was raised in the town of Corsham, Wiltshire. His family had a strong tradition in medicine with his father, grandfather and great grandfather all being doctors. Following that tradition, Barry attended boarding school at Epsom College in Surrey, which specialized in preparing students for a future in medicine. Upon completion of his studies at Epsom, Barry was accepted at St. Bartholomew's Hospital School of Medicine ("Barts") in London, graduating in 1954 at the age of 23. It was during his time at Barts that Barry was introduced to his wife, Pat who was in the nursing program there, getting engaged only ten days after they met and marrying in 1954 after he graduated. In 1956, Barry began his military national service, which was mandatory at the time, serving as a doctor in the Royal Air Force (RAF). He then moved back to Corsham, where he joined his father's medical practice, "The Porch Surgery" from 1960-1965. Encouraged by a cousin who had moved to Canada to practice medicine, Barry moved his family to Truro, Nova Scotia in 1965 where he continued to practice medicine for the next 46 years, finally retiring in 2011. While his primary focus was his own general/family practice, he provided services to the Millbrook clinic and the area nursing homes. He was highly active at the Colchester Regional Hospital over the years in the emergency room, as a part-time anesthesiologist, delivering thousands of babies and as Chief of Staff when it was an unpaid volunteer position. Medicine wasn't his only passion, Barry was an avid sportsman who enjoyed sailing, cross country skiing, golf, orienteering, running, and track and field. He ran marathons all over the world and competed in several triathlons and masters track and field events. He spent many happy summers participating in weekend sailing races with the Shortts Lake Yacht Club. Barry was a devoted husband of 65 years and father of five children. We all have memories of special moments with our Dad. He was a wonderful reader, bringing books to life and lighting up our imaginations. He was thrilled to introduce us to sports activities. He captivated the room as he spoke lovingly and eloquently at our weddings. He was endlessly devoted to our mother's care and wellbeing while she spent years declining in health due to Alzheimer's. Nobody could have asked for a more loving husband. Donations in his memory can be made to the Alzheimer Society https://alzheimer.ca/en/take-action/donate, the Colchester Hospital Auxiliary https://www.colchesterhospitalauxiliary.ca/donations/ or Kidsport Nova Scotia https://kidsportcanada.ca/nova-scotia/colchester-east-hants/. Due to restrictions in place, a celebration of Barry’s life will be planned at a later date. Meredith, Valerie - Age 83, Highland Village, passed away peacefully on September 1st, 2020. Born in Manchester, England on February 12th, 1937 to the late Joseph Bretton Jinks and Florence (Pott) Jinks. Valerie is survived by her sons, Stanley (Lori),Highland Village and Richard (Cindy), Highland Village; daughters, Rosemary (Mark),Highland Village and Valerie, Highland Village; grandchildren, Tom (Jaime), Matthew, Christine, Andrew, Megan, David, Renée, Mitchell, Olivia, Valene, and Roger; great grandchildren, Brenton and Paul, Tierney, Conlinn, and Finnigan, Kaycee and Benjamin, Jordan, and Danika and Sahara. Besides her parents, Valerie was predeceased by her beloved husband, Tom, and her eldest son, Griffith Thomas. To her family, Valerie was always known as Mum or Granny. Mum’s caring and compassionate nature combined with her deep love of animals and farming led her to Reaseheath Agricultural School in Cheshire, England. It was there that Mum met her sweet Tom and became his "girl in the mist". Just one of the many beautiful tales from their life together. Upon completing her studies, Mum married her sweet Tom and together they formed a loving and dedicated team for the next 63 years. Their married life began at Great Leys Farm in Shobdon, Herefordshire, England. Together, they operated a mixed farm and started their family of five children. In 1969, Mum and Dad’s adventurous souls brought them to Highland Village, Nova Scotia. It was here that they purchased the Geddes Farm and continued their love of farming. Shortly after their move, they began their farrow to finish pig farm that also produced a wide variety of grains. In later years, poultry became their focus. Mum loved and took pride in telling people that they were the "Home of the Happy Hens". As a continuation of the family farm, The Farm Gate Shop was opened in 2002. It was Mum’s pride and joy. Being in the shop and talking to her customers brought Mum great joy every single day. Mum also enjoyed numerous adventures and past times with Dad including participating in a variety of wine tasting societies, afternoons out birdwatching, late nights watching snooker, and traveling to lesser known Caribbean Islands. Mum had many passions and interests. She loved to capture the beauty of birds through paint on various materials. Whether it be on gardening tools, cutting boards, rocks, paper or wood, her paintings were always incredible. Several of these paintings are hanging in the homes of her children and grandchildren where they will be cherished and enjoyed for years to come. Mum was an extraordinary baker and cook. These talents will forever be preserved throughout the generations in a family recipe book that was handwritten by Mum and Dad. In later years, Mum’s pride and joy was her extensive orchid collection. Several of which were gifts from her loving family members. She took great pride in having them rebloom multiple times and loved to pass on tips to beginning orchid enthusiasts. Mum loved arranging flowers as well and would delight in arranging and displaying the various bouquets brought to her by her family. Her skills earned her ribbons and six name engravings on the McNally Cup for Arrangements from the Great Village Garden Club Flower Show. When visiting with Granny you often encountered a "little job" that could be done. These "little jobs" could be anything from tidying flower beds and trimming bushes to painting walls and laying carpet. Each "little job" created a special memory, as it was all time spent with Granny. Mum loved spending time with her family. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Karen Ewing. Dr. Ewing not only provided exceptional care and support to Mum but was also a dear friend. The family would also like to express a sincere thank you to Dr. McKenney, the attending doctors and nurses at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre and to Todd MacKinnon and staff of Bayside Pharmacy. ELLIOTT, Gerald Stafford  90, Economy. It is with broken hearts that our family announces the sudden passing of Gerald Stafford Elliott on Thursday evening, July 16, 2020, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Sadly, he was unable to celebrate his 90th birthday at home in his sunporch, drink in hand, surrounded by the people who adored him. Born "over the swamp" in Economy, he was one of ten children born to the late Raymond and Alice (Linkletter) Elliott; he idolized his mother. Dad was blessed with the natural gift of music at a very young age. He was often woken up at night to play the fiddle and was accompanied by his proud mother on the organ. Believe it or not, he was a very shy boy and disliked being around an audience; my how he changed over the years! Dad was a people person who had quite a sense of humour. Never purposefully trying to be funny, he had an amazing memory and unique way of telling a story and using so many funny sayings while telling it which made people laugh. There was certainly "no filter" on the "Kingpin’s" mouth! So many people loved Dad which was evident in the way his community, friends or family looked out for him; whether it was delivering a meal, doing odd jobs, looking out for him, visiting with him or always taking the time to check in, he was well loved. He was quite a character and although Dad only had a grade six education, he was a very smart man. He read the "Comical Herald" from cover to cover, always keeping on top of current events. He had a great mind for numbers, never forgetting dates, phone numbers, etc. He enjoyed figuring out how to save a penny by shutting off his car while coasting down a hill, figuring out how many cents his Cheez Whiz cost per day, how long his pepper from The Bulk Barn lasted per month and taking bottles to the bottle exchange even though it probably cost him more in gas taking them there. A frugal guy, Dad kept his cupboards well stocked with kidney beans and V8. Dad lived on very little money and yet he still managed to save a few dollars; he was fascinated by people who were very successful in life. Dad worked at various jobs throughout his lifetime, the last being a truck driver for Dennison. His music continued to be a major part of his life, entertaining people from far and wide with his amazing talent; Dad used to say "I used to get paid for playing and now I pay people to listen." He was a steadfast provider for his family. Our family has been very fortunate that Dad had an amazing memory and quick wit right up until the end. He loved to talk on the phone and we’ll miss his numerous calls every day. We are so thankful he was able to live the way he wanted, in his own "pad", doing and saying what he wanted. The "Mayor of Economy" has left us all with wonderful memories of a life well lived. He will be forever loved and missed. For now, as he would say, "Goodnight, Irene, and Jimmy as well." Left to mourn are his children, Terry (Donna), Linda (Warren Foster), Bruce (Gloria); grandchildren, Christi (Craig Ryan), Michelle (Anthony Spagnoli), Heather (Mark Jacula), Patrick, Mathew, Daniel; great grandchildren, Audrey, Erin, Ethan, Sydney, Ben; sisters, Olive Lorette, Audrey Fitzpatrick, Gloria Aitkin, Stella Forbes; brother, Carl. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Joyce (Turner); sisters, Irene (Webb), Doris (Chisholm); brothers, Merle, Percy.

A celebration of Gerald’s life will be held in Economy at a later date. If so desired, donations in his memory to Economy Recreation Centre are welcomed. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall - Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. Private messages of condolence may be sent to the family by viewing Gerald’s obituary on-line and selecting "Send A Condolence" at: www.mattatallvarnerfh.com

FORBES, Roland Cecil passed away peacefully on May 30, 2020. Oh darn!!If you’re reading this – gosh, it means I must have went up yonder...or I hope I did!! Please don’t grieve for me, instead celebrate my life for I have had a good one. I experienced working in the nickel mines in Ontario for a couple of years, rode the rails out West while working for the Canadian Pacific Railway for a few years. Really saw how beautiful our country is, but Nova Scotia was calling me back home to Truro, where I went to work at the carpet factory for a few years. I joined the Labour International Union #612 Halifax, NS working on a lot of projects and buildings in and around Truro for over thirteen years after which I was offered a job at the Main Brace Veteran’s Club where I was the bar manager for over twelve years until the Main Brace Club closed its doors. After a couple of years, I was fortunate to get a job at the RCAFA Air Force Club Wing 102 where I worked at the bar there for thirteen years. The years working in the bars were really enjoyable – I met so many really good people, listened to their stories and laughed at their jokes. Today, I am sad to say that I leave behind my best friend, the one I lived for, dreamed with and loved – my common-law wife of 36 years, Elizabeth "Liz" Dyke; my two beautiful daughters, Kathleen (Kathi) Barkhouse and her husband, Rick and their sons, Justin, Logan and Jordan and Miriam Forbes and her son, Steven – all living in Kentville; my wonderful stepson, Roy Butt and his wife Cindy living in Kelowna, BC. I was predeceased by my father, Charles Forbes; mother, Kathleen (Lewis) Forbes and brother, Lewis Forbes. No service by request. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Red Cross. Arrangements have been entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro. HARRISON, Phillip Allan - age 81, of Great Village died on May 30, 2020. Phil was a remarkable man who looked everyone in the eye and welcomed them with a smile, a firm handshake and a big hug. Born in Halifax, Phil had a very humble childhood. His move to a Shubenacadie farm as a young teenager was life-changing. For many years he volunteered his time and mentorship to countless youth in West Colchester coaching minor hockey and broom ball. Thom with the Crofts. Throughout his life Dave had a natural, mechanical aptitude with multiple patented inventions.
