MURPHY, John Edward - 91, Debert. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, husband, grandfather, and great-grandfather on October 24, 2012, surrounded by his family at home. Born in Lameline, Newfoundland, on February 16, 1921, he was a son of the late Peter and Suzanne (Benteau) Murphy. DDEN, Gladys Evelyn – 96, Central Onslow, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family Friday Morning, November 2, 2012. Born December 29, 1915 in Nether Wallop, Hampshire, England, she was a daughter of the late Alfred and Louisa (Canning) Hawkins. In 1945 Gladys arrived in Halifax as a war bride, where she then settled in Central Onslow. She enjoyed camping and fishing with her husband and family. She is survived by her loving children John Whidden, Kemptown; daughter Shirley (Robert) Hall, Greenfield; loving grandchildren Gloria Nelson (Ricky Fleck), Kim (Richard) Keizer, Susan Whidden (Jodie), Rodney Whidden, Troy Whidden; very loving great-grandchildren Stephanie (Godfrey), Mychal (Brandon), Bailee, Mya, Dennis, Jennifer, Corey, Alexis; extended family Denise Hall (Rick Munro), Lorenda (Joe) Harper, Brittany, Jason and special friend Cathy Blaikie. Born in Bonnie, Edinburgh, Scotland, February 16, 1920, she was a daughter of the late James and Elizabeth Murray and loving wife of the late Angus Alexander. Ellen and Angus met in Scotland during the war and were married November 6, 1943 before arriving in Canada at Pier 21 in Halifax aboard the "Aquatania" with bonnie lass Elizabeth in tow. She is lovingly survived by her children, Elizabeth (Ralph), Judy, John (Peggy), Beverly (Gordon), Murray (Thelma), Caroline (Ronnie), Darlene (Mike) and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews in Canada and bonnie Scotland. Also survived by sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Ileen Alexander, Betty Crossman, Glenda Young, Eileen Giddens and Ken Smith. She was predeceased by her grand-daughter, Tina Marie Blair, step-grandson, Lenny Irving, son-in-law, Peter Beazley. Ellen worked at the Masstown Market for many years beginning in 1972 and made numerous friends within the community and was loved by many. She was well known throughout the area for her handcrafted jewelry, having supplied many craft shops and shows throughout the region. RATCHFORD, Merriam L. - 74, of Spencer’s Island passed away Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at Bayview Memorial Health Care Centre, Advocate Harbour. Born in Spencer’s Island, he was a son of the late Laurence and Mary (Spicer) Merriam. Ratchford started his professional life with Swift Canadian. In 1960, he started his first business as a hearing aid audiologist on Quinpool Road in Halifax. In 1964, he joined Mutual Life of Canada where he remained until his retirement in 1999, at which time he returned to Spencer’s Island. In 2000, he put his name forward as a municipal councillor, and had just recently entered his fourth term serving the constituents of Cumberland County, District 10. He is survived by his wife, the former Winnie MacLeod; a daughter, Shelley, Spencer’s Island; sons, Brian (Maria), Halifax; Brent (Debbie), Diligent River; sisters, Thelma Traill (Jim), Amherst Shore; Pat Merriam (Barry Small), Oakville, Ont.; grandchildren, Matthew, Laura and Sarah. RECTOR, Elston C. April 23, 1941-September 20, 2012. Born in Bass River, NS to Audrey (Newton) and H. Borden Rector. Elston, affectionately known as El or Al, died peacefully at George Dumont Hospital, Moncton, NB, after a courageous 16-month battle with colon cancer. Left with broken hearts are his wife, Sharon MacDonald Rector, Oxford NS; daughters, Kelly Rector, Woodstock ON; Kimberly (Rick) Koch, St Thomas ON; stepsons, Corey Hansen, Oxford NS; Karl (Andrea) Hansen, Milton ON; mother, Audrey Rector Akerman, Cedarstone Enhanced Care, Truro, NS; sister, Colleen Rector, Dartmouth NS, and grandchildren Joshua Rector, Jessica Koch, Timothy Koch, and Thomas Chambers. He is also survived by several step-brothers and sisters in Ontario. He was predeceased by his brother Vaughn in 1965 and his father, Bordie, in 1977, and his step-father, Harland Akerman in 2012. Elston fulfilled his childhood dream of being a Truck Owner - Operator, and was employed by Midland Transport for 36 years. One of his proudest employment achievements was receiving a four million mile accident free award from the Company, and was rewarded with an Alaskan Cruise for Sharon and himself. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of his life was held September 29, 2012 at Christ Church, Anglican, 5 Lawrence St, in downtown Amherst NS followed by a reception and shared memories in the Church hall. Interment followed at Riverside United Church cemetery in Bass River, NS.
MCCULLY, Ada J. – 72, of Diligent River passed away September 23, 2012 at Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan. Born in Yorke Settlement, she was a daughter of the late Ervin and Lillian (Bowden) Yorke. Ada with her husband Floyd, operated the Southampton Irving Gas Station and Convenience Store for 10 years. She was a member and trustee of the Lower Five Islands United Church, where for many years she served as a teacher and secretary for the Sunday School. LING, Margaret E. – 93, of Parrsboro passed away suddenly on Friday, October 12, 2012 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan. Born in Melville, PEI, she was a daughter of the late Hector D. and Laura B. (MacWilliams) Gillis. Margaret was very involved in community service and was an active member of Trinity United Church since she moved to Parrsboro in 1968. Her involvement with volunteer organizations included serving as President of the Parrsboro Lioness Club and 25 years as President of the Ladies Hospital Auxiliary, President of Unit II UCW Group and past member of the Board of Directors of the Cumberland Arthritis Society. She received numerous awards for her service including the Governor General’s Award, Provincial Volunteer of the Year Award and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Award, among many others. In 1972, he began working for Kent Homes for whom he erected houses and landscaped all over the Maritimes. In 1985 he began working for Colchester County as a By-law officer. John had a great love for animals and continued his work until his retirement in 2006. We wish to give special thanks to all the nurses and doctors in the CCU of the Moncton City Hospital and to Guy and Lynn. Born in Bridgetown, she was the eldest daughter of Henrietta and Joseph Bent. Jeanne met the love of her life, Milton when he came to work on the dykes of the Annapolis Basin. They were married at her family home in 1947. Together they lived in Central Onslow and raised three children. Nancy was the daughter of the late W. Alex Fiddes and Florence M. (Biswanger) Fiddes, Onslow, NS. Her working career in Truro, Pictou and Kentville included various banking positions and prior to her retirement, was the manager of the Town of Truro Housing Authority for 9 years. Born November 7, 1933, in New Annan, East Wentworth, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Mildred (Campbell) Walsh. LINDSAY, Warren Thomas – 82, Truro, passed away July 28, 2012 in Colchester Regional Hospital, peacefully and surrounded by his loving family. Born in Brookfield, N.S., he was the son of the late John Lewis Lindsay and the late Orpha Maude (Bates) Lindsay. Warren graduated from Mt. Allison University in 1956. He then headed West where he worked in several positions, lastly as a Systems Analyst, for Imperial Oil Limited in Calgary, Alberta for 35 years. In 2007, Warren and his loving-wife of 47 years, Anne, returned to Warren's Maritime-home, Truro, Nova Scotia. Warren is survived and missed terribly by his wife, Anne; son, Michael and wife, Delphine, Providence, R.I.; his daughter, Trish, Lower Onslow, N.S.; sister, Marian Parker (Ernie Parker), Truro, N.S; brother, Robert (Dorothy) Lindsay, Dartmouth.; sister-in-law, Roberta (Art) Lindsay, Stewiacke, N.S.; cousins, and many nieces and nephews; Extended families: Lee and Hank Hargreaves and family, Claresholm, AB; Pamela Miller and family, Bashaw, Alberta; and our Nova Scotian daughter, Suzanne Adshead and family. CAMPBELL, John H.S. – 80, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2012 in Rosewood Manor Nursing Home in Richmond, B.C. where he has resided since January of 2000. Born in Truro, John was the son of the late Rev. Dr. Herman and Margaret (Kuhn) Campbell. He is survived by his wife, the former June Winters; sisters, Isabel (Rev. John) Henderson, Pictou; Wendy Bierman, Caldwell, Idaho; a brother, Paul (Danielle), Halifax. Fred spent his early years working in local sawmills and at the Bass River Chair Factory. In 1969, he married Cheryl Hiltz, now deceased. After returning to Nova Scotia, Fred worked at Camp Debert until his retirement in 1996. CAMERON, (Frail) Marie I. - 98, passed away peacefully at her home in Lower Debert, NS, on June 9th, 2012. Born October 23rd, 1913, in Scot’s Bay, NS, she spent her married life in Truro, moving to Lower Debert nine years ago. Marie came to Truro and went to Normal College in 1933. She taught school for two years before marrying in 1936. After 75 years she has followed Weldon by only seven months. She ran the office for Weldon in his plumbing and heating business. SWAN, Lillian Delena (Geldart) – 77, Truro. Loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend passed away Thursday morning, June 14, 2012, at Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro, after bravely enduring a brief battle with cancer. Delena was married to Basil Anderson Swan for 58 years. RUSHTON, Raymond Blois, Truro - It’s with deep sadness that the family of Raymond Blois Rushton announces his passing on June 15. 2012. Ray has been reunited with his parents, Abartha and Bertha Rushton (nee: Cochrane); his first wife of 49 years, Marian Elizabeth (nee: MacKay); second wife Katherine Langille; infant daughter Linda; sons Raymond Logan and Bryce Lawrence and grand daughter Sandi Gail; his favorite and only sister Ruthene Faulkner; and brothers Lloyd, Cecil, Ralph, and Bill. WILLIGAR, Ruth O. – 77, of Calgary, Alta., and formerly of Parrsboro passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at Bowcrest Care Centre, Calgary. Born at Parrsboro Roads, she was a daughter of the late Desmond and Rachel (Read) Willigar. Ruth went to school for grades primary to ten at West Bay, then to Parrsboro for grades eleven and twelve. Following her graduation from Nova Scotia Teachers’ College in Truro, she taught school in Nova Scotia, later moving to Alberta to teach in Calgary. Ruth is survived by her older sister, Minnie D. Goode, Red Deer, Alta.; a nephew, Timothy Goode (Margaret), and their three sons, Michael, Nathan & Adam, Lacombe, Alta. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Sheldon D. ATKINSON, Florence A. - 99, of Parrsboro passed away peacefully on Monday, April 23, 2012 at the South Cumberland Community Care Centre, Parrsboro. She was a daughter of the late John and Maude (Neal) Hastings. Florence was born in Vancouver, but spent most of her early life in Amherst. She was a graduate in 1935 of Mount Allison University, Ladies College with a degree in music. After graduation, she moved to Parrsboro where she taught private piano lessons for many years. She was organist and choir director of Trinity United Church, Parrsboro for 50 years. She is survived by daughter, Lois Hebb (Lewis), Parrsboro; son, K. David Atkinson (Helene), Parrsboro; granddaughter, Bev Hebb-Wasson (Jim), Fall River; grandson, Rick Hebb (Nicolette), Dartmouth; great granddaughters, Kellyanne Hebb-Pretty, Raquel Wasson, Felicia Wasson; great-grandsons, Beau Wasson and Canaan Hebb; several nieces and nephews. CORBIN, Warren A. – 93, of Advocate Harbour passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at Bayview Memorial Health Care Centre, Advocate Harbour. Born in Advocate Harbour, he was a son of the late Leo and Mae (Hiltz) Corbin. Warren was a cook for the Reid Family in West Advocate beginning when he was 13 years of age, and afterwards with McCully and Soy for many years. Later in life, he operated Fundy Trail Restaurant and Bakery in Advocate Harbour. He was a life member and former deacon of the Advocate Baptist Church.
