TUCKER,
Amos J., 85, of Sussex, passed away peacefully at home
surrounded by family on April 2, 2014. Amos was born in
Bayfield, NB, a son of the late Lloyd and Hazel (Amos) Tucker on
February 18, 1929. Amos is survived by wife Elva (nee Vance of Bass River); son Gerald Tucker, Sussex, NB; daughters: Mary Isaacs and Jerry Sparkes, Sussex, NB, and Sheila Tucker-Crawford and her husband Stephen Crawford, Quispamsis, NB; sister-in-law, Isabelle (Al) Pyle, Aurora, ON; grandchildren: Michael Tucker, Edmonton, AB, Lloyd Tucker, Halifax, NS, Douglas Isaacs and wife Megan, Saint John, NB, Thomas Isaacs, Saint John, NB, John Crawford, Quispamsis, NB, Luke Crawford, Quispamsis, NB; brother Albert and his wife Barbara, Bayfield, NB; sister Agnes Tucker, Pictou, NS and several nieces and nephews. Amos and his family spent most of each summer at Saints Rest for the last 57 years. Bass River had a very special place in his heart. His family has developed strong ties to the area and will continue their relationship there. Amos graduated from elementary school in Bayfield, NB in 1945 and from Dorchester Superior High School in 1946, Teachers College in Fredericton in 1947. He obtained a Bachelor of Teaching degree and a Bachelor of Education degree from U.N.B. Amos was principal of the Graded School in Port Elgin, NB, then Head of the Mathematics Dept at the Regional Memorial High School Port Elgin, NB before coming to Sussex in 1957 where he taught for 27 years, and served both as Vice Principal and Principal. Amos was a member and a retired elder of St Paul’s United Church, Sussex, NB, Faculty Advisor to the Sussex Key Club, organized and served as Faculty Advisor to the Sussex Keywanettes Club and honourary member of the Sussex Kiwanis Club. Amos is also a retired past Noble Grand of the Port Elgin I.O.O.F. Lodge, frequently attending lodge in Bass River with his late father inlaw Elmer Vance and brother inlaw Lawrence Vance. Amos was predeceased by infant granddaughter Sarah Crawford. The funeral service was held on Saturday April 5, 2014, in St, Paul’s United Church, Sussex. Interment will be held at a later date. LYNDS, Joan Winnifred – 78, Lower Harmony, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2014, at home. Born February 2, 1936, in Truro, she was a daughter of the late James and Winnifred (Dicks) Frizzell. DeWOLF, Stephen Eugene – 81, Debert, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2014 in The Mira Long Term Care Facility, Truro. Born in Antigonish, he was the son of the late Walter and Marie (Gregoire) DeWolf. Stephen was a master carpenter and built many homes. He was often talked into playing Santa at various area locations including nursery schools and Masstown Market. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ruth (Deon); daughter, Marcia (Greg Wentzell) Zwicker, Clifton; son, Eugene "Ted" (Elizabeth), Beaumont, Alta; sister, Joan (Edward) Doyle, Plymouth, Mass.; grandchildren, Jeremy Zwicker, Katie Zwicker; step granddaughter, Bronwyn; several nieces and nephews. CHAPMAN, Sandra Olivia (Bylund) – 58, North River. With saddened hearts we regretfully announce the passing of Sandra Olivia (Bylund) Chapman, on Monday, March 24, 2014, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, with her loving children at her side. Born August 25, 1955, in Worcester, Massachusetts, USA, she was a daughter of the late Russell and Shirley (Munro) Bylund, and moved to Nova Scotia in 1965. Sandra was a waitress at China Rose Café since it opened in 1990, where she worked alongside her best friend and "sister", Leona Tam. Her customers were her second family and they will miss her dry sense of humour and sassy attitude. Sandra is survived by and will be missed her loving husband of 40 years, Eldon; children, Sacha, Shane (Sara), Sonja (Gordie); grandchildren, Camrin, Lilly Mae; brother, Kenneth (Brenda) Bylund; nephews, Geoffrey and Peter Bylund; step-children, Mark, Lisa. MacSWAIN, Mark Jeffery – 35, Central Onslow - It is with heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of Mark Jeffery MacSwain on March 28, 2014 in Alberta due to complications from diabetes. Born in Truro, he was the son of Randy and the late Mary Ann MacSwain. Mark will be deeply missed by his childhood love, his wife Barbara (Dow), and their beautiful daughters, Taylor and Kasey, both at home. RUSHTON, Hazel Elizabeth (Murray) – 81, of Truro/Roslin went to Heaven on March 30, 2014 at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Hazel lovingly known as "Nan" was born in Roslin, Cumberland County on April 22, 1932. She was the daughter of the late Arthur and Florence (Black) Murray. Hazel knit thousands of mittens and many were gifted and donated to children and adults in the Colchester area. Hazel is survived by her daughters, Judy (Richard) Ross, Jane (Stewart) Matheson, both of Truro; son, Bradley, Truro; sister, Erma Rushton, Truro; brother, Douglas Murray, Kingston, N.S; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; many nephews and nieces, all of whom she loved dearly. GREENOUGH, Russel A. – 99, of Five Islands passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at the Camphill Veteran’s Memorial Building, QEII, Halifax. Born in Five Islands, he was a son of the late Ernest and Elda (Patterson) Greenough. Russel was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Signal Corp. Following the war, he worked at the Halifax Dockyards, retiring as a foreman in 1975. He is survived by a daughter, Helen Greenough (John), Halifax; a son, John Greenough, Kelowna, B.C.; a sister, Doreen Fulmore, Stellarton; a granddaughter, Catherine Greenough, Kelowna; sister-in law, Ruby MacKay (Arthur), Margaree Harbour. He was predeceased by his wife, Adelaide in 2008; a sister, Hazel; brothers, Clifford, John, Bruce; brother-in law John MacLean (Cheryl). He was active in Peniel United Church for decades serving as Clerk of Session, Elder, and choir member. He loved his home and garden in Five Islands. CURRIE, Michael Eugene - 57, Crowes Mills, passed away suddenly in the Cumberland Regional Health Center, Amherst on April 4, 2014 after several years residence in East Cumberland Lodge, Pugwash. Born in Truro, he was the son of Jean (Armsworthy) and the late Frederick Currie. Mike was employed at Canadian Automotive Radiator for over 15 years. Mike loved people and life, a generous man and never had an unkind word about anyone. He was punctual and liked routine. Mike's simple pleasures were to fish, play darts, a taste of Crown Royal, scratch tickets, diet Coke, Coronation Street and mom’s mac ‘n cheese. He was a past member of the Horsemen's Club and the Debert Legion. Mike was a good son, a great brother and a proud uncle. FIELD, David E. – 57, of Parrsboro passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at South Cumberland Community Care Centre, Parrsboro. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Elmer and Doris (Allen) Field. David has been a resident of Parrsboro his entire life touching the hearts of so many. After the passing of his mom and dad, his brothers and sisters dedicated their lives to his care. FILLMORE, Marion E. – 91, of Advocate Harbour. Born in Spencer’s Island, she was a daughter of the late Wellington and Utah (Milton) Grant. Marion was a member of Advocate United Church and the Dulcie Cook Group for many years. In earlier years, she was a member of the Advocate United Church Choir and loved all aspects of music, including singing and playing the piano. She did the cooking at Bayview Memorial Hospital from 1964 to 1984. JOHNSON, Delia Maxine (Morrisey) – 96, Truro. Delia passed away peacefully at Wynn Park Villa with family by her side on April 15, 2014. Born in Halifax on September 19, 1917, she was the daughter of the late John and Loretta (Martell) Morrisey. She was a survivor of the Halifax Explosion of December 1917. ASHER, John Adrian – 69, Truro passed away peacefully Sunday, April 20, 2014 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Huddersfield, England, he was a son of the late Herbert and Stella Asher. John operated Murphy’s Fish & Chips Restaurant on Prince Street, Truro in his earlier years. John worked with and supported mental health issues for many years. She worked endless hours as a housekeeper and as an operator at the local telephone office, all while raising small children on her own. Following her marriage to Arley in 1970, she worked by his side to build their successful contracting business until their retirement in 1994. Patsy enjoyed the operation of her popular craft shop, "The Hobby House" for which she produced a variety of homemade crafts and sewing. She was incredibly loved and will be sadly missed forever. MOWATT, Mildred Carrie, 88, Bible Hill, passed away January 28th, 2014 at the Aberdeen Regional Hospital, New Glasgow. Born April 11th, 1925 in Bass River, she was the daughter of the late Smith Moore and Margaret (Gamble) Goodliffe. Before becoming a homemaker she taught school in various communities in Colchester County. Mom was a life-long member of the United Church of Canada, loved to knit and do her crossword puzzles. She spent many hours over the years travelling to football stadiums, ball fields and hockey arenas supporting her grandsons, of whom she was most proud. She was also known to stay up all hours of the night watching the game and cheering on her Toronto Blue Jays. She is survived by daughters Brenda (Wade) Harvey, Greenfield, Queens Co., Linda (Royden) Yorke, Lower Debert, grandsons Wade Jr. (Erin), Vanderhoof, BC, Gabriel (Shya), Quesnel, BC, Scott (Ally), Fredericton, NB, three great grandchildren, a sister, Marion Cox, Saskatoon, Sk, cousin and close friend, Madeline Gamble, Truro, brother-in law and sisters-in-law as well as several nephews and nieces. MORRIS, Michel S. – 77, Parrsboro passed away Monday, February 17, 2014 at Gables Lodge, Amherst with family by his side. Born in Diligent River, he was a son of the late Vaughn and Flora (Chandler) Morris. Early in his life, he worked in the woods prior to joining the military in 1958. Mike was first posted to CFB, Gagetown, then Germany (two postings), Petawawa, Ont., Calgary ending his military career back in Gagetown in 1979. He served two peacekeeping missions in Egypt and Cyprus. He was an active and long serving member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #45, Parrsboro. More recent years have been spent struggling with a brain injury sustained in a car accident in 1984. RICE, Harry Allan – 73, River John, Pictou Co., passed on to be with Jesus on February 19, 2014 at the QEII, Infirmary Site, Halifax. Harry was born in Orillia, Ont. on October 25, 1940. He was the eldest son of the late Joseph and Agnes (Bush) Rice. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy for 25 years before retirement. He particularly enjoyed woodworking and carpentry which he worked at in his earlier years. Harry was affiliated with the Baptist Church, serving as a Deacon. He was also an avid hunter and was noted to be a crack shot. He left his family at milking time as a true dairy and later beef farmer who was proud of his two sons who followed in his footsteps. MARTIN, Ralph W. - It is with sadness we announce the death of Ralph W. Martin on December 19th, 2013, a longtime resident of Lower Economy and most recently of Parrsboro. Ralph was born in 1935, in Somerset, Bermuda, to Cyril and Ruth (Pitman) Martin. He started working for the Bermuda Press when a teenager as a linotype operator and, after a few years working for Triminghams, returned there and worked many years for the Royal Gazette newspaper in sales and advertising. It was his love of farming that lead him and his wife to Nova Scotia and a farm in Lower Economy, where he enjoyed raising whatever made him happy. Together Ralph and Corynne had the ‘Um Um Tearoom’ for a few years before purchasing the Economy Country Store. Together with their youngest son, they ran the store for fifteen years. He and his wife finally decided to close the store and retire when seventy six years old. Ralph is survived by his wife of fifty two years, Corynne (Durant) Martin and four children – Sue-Ellyn Eldridge, Parrsboro/BVI; Todd Martin (Mya), Bermuda; Jayson Martin (Ana), Brampton, Ont.; Matthew Martin (Caitilin), Economy – and grandchildren, William, Benjamin, Rebecca, Christopher, Carlos, Sabrina, Rachel, Moss and Eowyn. CORBIN, Clark W. – 74, of New Salem died Sunday, December 22, 2013 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan after a brave and valiant battle with cancer. SEARS, Randy Garfield - July 17th, 1956 - December 23rd, 2013, Truro and Tatamagouche. It is with profound sadness we announce Randy's passing on December 23rd, 2013. As he had wished, he was at his home in Tatamagouche surrounded by his loving family. He was in his 57th year. Randy was born in Bible Hill, loving son of Vera MacAllister (MacBurnie) and the late Chesley Matthews. Protective brother to Carol (Robin and children Tara and Tyler) and stepson to Donald MacAllister. He was a doting husband to Linda and immensely proud father to Lauren Jade and Hilary Taylor. Brother-in-law to Robert (Sylvia), Jeff (Mary), and Mai (Ivan) Joe and uncle to their children (Cindy, Robyn, Christopher, Brian, Samantha, Erika, and Michael). Son-in-law to Gordon and Ying Fu Joe. Randy was an incredibly protective and generous man to his family. He was also supportive of his community, always giving back. In particular, he took pride in giving to local youth sport programs. Randy had a very successful career in the car business. His dream of owning his own dealership became a reality in 1995 and, together with his partner Dave Edey, founded Century Honda in Truro followed by Century Hyundai. He became sole owner in 2007. Randy was blessed with many loyal customers. Even if a customer's name alluded him, Randy could miraculously recall the model and year of the car that they had purchased. His team of outstanding employees helped him to achieve a high level of excellence with the stores and they supported his entrepreneurial spirit and creativity. He formed many friendships in his dealer network and enjoyed the camaraderie at dealer meetings and golf tournaments. WASSON, Ruth Irene – Great Village. It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Mom, Ruth Wasson, 86, on January 3, 2014 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Great Village, where she moved upon her illness in October. MOWBRAY-WILLIAMS, Alison Joyce, Truro. Our Mother, Alison Joyce Mowbray-Williams of Truro, Nova Scotia, died at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro on Jan 6, 2014. Born to Alfred and Phyllis Williams on March 27, 1936 in Twickenham, England, she moved to Canada after the war in 1947. Following graduation from the Ontario Veterinary College in 1960 she moved to 'live by the sea', practiced veterinary medicine and raised her family in Truro along with her husband, 'Mac' Mowbray. She co-owned Mowbray Veterinary Clinic in Onslow with Mac and later opened the Truro Veterinary Clinic where she cared for the beloved pets of many families. She was a member of the Council of Canadians and New Democratic Party. She is survived by her son William Mowbray and three daughters: Gwen Mowbray-Cashen (Chris Cashen) and their children Tara and Quinn; Fran Mowbray (Luiz Mello) with their children Neeson and Erik; Juanita Powell (Wayne) and their children Maddie, Farley and Andrew. Her strong will, determination and positive spirit was an inspiration for all. PUTNAM, Ethel "Beryl" - 98, of Debert passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 22, 2014 after a full and inspiring life rich with generosity, spirit, and love. Beryl was born to the late Everett and Mae McCully on December 27, 1915. She spent her childhood on the family farm in Debert where she and her siblings had many adventures in the barn, fields and woods surrounding the Putnam homestead. She married Albert Putnam in 1933 and they moved to the Soley house where Beryl stayed at home to raise her four children while Bert worked as a lumber foreman for McCully & Soy Ltd. This was her home where family memories were made until 2011 when she moved into the Debert Court Shannex. Beryl was a gifted story teller and loved to talk about her years working at Barnhill’s store, Putnam’s Jewelry, the Palliser gift shop, and as a cook at various lumber camps over the years with her brother Sid and husband Bert. Beryl is survived by her sons Glenn Putnam (Doreen), Masstown; Grant Putnam (Phyllis), Truro; daughter Marie (Ron) Slack, Hagersville Ontario; brother Gordon McCully (Phyllis), Debert, and companion Cecil, Truro. She also is survived by her ten grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and eight great-great grandchildren. Beryl was predeceased by her husband Bert Putnam, son Ralph Putnam and daughter-in-law Betty (Swan) Putnam, brothers George, Curtis and Sidney and sister Evelyn (Putnam) Simpson. JEFFERS, David A. – 64, of Halifax, and formerly of Parrsboro, passed away Sunday, November 24, 2013 at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax following a brief battle with cancer. Born in Lakelands, he was a son of the late Roy and Dorothy (Meldrum) Jeffers. He was automotive mechanic for many years. He is survived by a daughter, Kelly Warren (Harvey), Cole Harbour; sisters, Rosella Fader (Gerald); Bertha Rector (Basil), all of Parrsboro; brothers, Leon, Geary, N.B.; Floyd (Betty), Parrsboro; John (Belle), Florida; 2 grandchildren, Jonathan and Emily. He remained great friends with his former wife, Barbara (Lamb) Jeffers, Amherst. As well, the family would like to acknowledge Chris and Ruth with whom took great care in looking after him of late, and were great friends to him for many years. McNEIL, Michael Robert, 39, Canadian Forces Base, Petawawa, Ontario, formerly of Truro, passed away Wednesday, November 27, 2013, in Petawawa. Born March 6, 1974, in Windsor, Nova Scotia, he was a son of Michael and Carolyn (Sanford) McNeil, Truro. Michael served this country with The Canadian Armed Forces and was currently a Warrant Officer in the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment. He was the Recce Platoon Warrant Officer and also served as a parachutist and leader in M Company. He had two tours to Afghanistan, one to Croatia and one to Bosnia. Michael’s commitment and dedication made him a top soldier. WO Michael McNeil was highly regarded by his comrades as a true professional who led by example. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and skiing. Along with his parents, Michael is survived by his children, Raianne, Ethan, Emma and stepson, Nicholas Simms; sister, Janet McNeil, Truro; brother, Kevin McNeil, Vancouver; maternal step grandfather, Norman Hart, Windsor; several aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and Military family whom he truly loved. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Ellen McNeil in infancy; maternal grandparents, Harold and Myrna (Hart) Sanford; paternal grandparents, Robert and Margaret (Pritchett) McNeil; and fallen comrade and cousin whom he served with, Frank Robert Mellish. Funeral service was held Thursday, December 5, 2013, at Truro Armouries, 126 Willow Street, Truro, Nova Scotia, Padre (Rev.) Randy Stanton officiated. LEGERE, Cecil Clifford – 61, Debert, passed away Wednesday, November 27, 2013. Born January 20, 1952, in Truro, he was a son of the late Reginald and Jean (Milner) Legere. Cecil worked for many years as a truck driver with Barnhill’s and Kent Homes. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, four wheeling and restoring antique farm machinery. He will be missed by his K-9 companion, Lucky. Cecil is survived by his wife of 32 years, Barb (Sullivan), Truro; sons, Cliff Legere (Sharon Kehoe), Halifax; Anthony (Jeannette) Legere, Toronto; sisters, Deborah MacKenzie (Blaine McCurdy), Manganese Mines; brothers, Karl Legere, Salmon River; Elmer (Heather) Legere, Nuttby; several nieces and nephews. SENCABAUGH, Josephine S. "Jo" – 96, of Parrsboro passed away Monday, December 2, 2013 at South Cumberland Community Care Centre, Parrsboro. Born in Berwick, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Olive (Sweet) Brown. Jo was a devoted member of the Parrsboro Baptist Church and active with the Willing Workers and Women’s Missionary Society for many years. She is survived by a son, Gordon, Parrsboro; a sister, Rose Whalen, Kentville; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Lawson; a son, Carson on November 21, 2013; sisters, Alice, Betty, Ester; brothers, Murray, Bruce. RUSHTON, Aubrey Ellis – 93, Truro went to be with his Lord and Saviour on December 5, 2013 in Cedarstone Enhanced Care, Truro. Born in Lornevale on March 9, 1920, he was a son of the late Arthur and Mabel (Hanson) Rushton. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Evelyn (Rushton); son, Wayne, Lornevale; daughters, Joan Seaton, Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.; Valerie (Fred) Seeton, Truro; brother, Emmett, Rivers, Man.; sisters, Margaret Scott, Bible Hill, Catherine Rushton, Beaverbrook; seven grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by sons, Lyall Vernon and Glen Allen; sisters, Olive, Jean, Erma; brother, Harold. Aubrey was a veteran of the Second World War serving four years overseas in Scotland. He was a woodsman and a Commissionaire at Camp Debert. He worked in Wawa, Ontario for Algoma Steel before retiring at Folly Lake, NS where he enjoyed doing maintenance for his neighbours. WILE, Venus Elizabeth - Onslow Mountain passed away December 6, 2013 at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre. Born in Halifax, February 24; she was the daughter of the late Ervin and Violet (MacLeod) Wood, Upper Nine Mile River. She worked at Stanfield’s for many years, Glengarry Motel, Keddy’s, Stonehouse Motel, the Hat Factory and was a homemaker. She was also a landlady. Venus is survived by her husband of 64 years, Donald Wile, Onslow Mountain; daughters Sylvia (Elva) MacDonald, Upper Nine Mile River, Heather Harnish, Onslow Mountain; sons Stephen (Heather), Calgary, David, Truro and honorary daughter Cathy (Joe) Merlin, Alton; granddaughters Janessa (Aaron) Driedger, Shannon (Josh) Bartlett, Tiffany (Kyle) Harnish, Jordan (Cameron) Birch; grandsons Jeffery (Andrea) MacDonald, Jonathan MacDonald, Luke (Alyssa) Wile and 9 great grandchildren. CASEY, Ruth Pauline (Rushton) – 88, Londonderry Station, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 7, 2013, surrounded by her family at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre. Born on March 14, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Christina Rushton. Ruth spent her childhood years with her grandparents in Westchester Mountain and later moved to Londonderry Station. She worked at Stanfields in Truro before marrying and starting her family. She was very active in her community church and was a member of the church club for 65 years. Ruth was known for her wonderful cooking and everyone was always welcome in her home and at her table. The main focus of her life was her family and the never ending love she had for them. She is survived by her nine children, Glen (Karen) Casey, Brenda (James) Mosher, Carol (Sedley) MacKenzie, Debbie (Gordie) Jordan, Kenneth (Patti) Casey, Chris (Sonya) Casey, Timmy (Beth) Casey, Pat (Kevin) Findley and Paul Casey; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; brother, Arnold Turner; sisters, Juanita Corbett, Rose Wright and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond of 53 years and an infant daughter at birth; sisters, Evelyn Millen, Joyce Elliott and brother, Gary Turner. Born in Ward’s Brook, he was a son of the late Ambrose "Corby" and Bertha (Smith) Dowe. Allison was a retired lumberman and mill worker. He was an avid outdoorsman, and was an active scout leader in Parrsboro for many years. KAY, Stephen C. - It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of a beloved brother, fun loving uncle and precious friend, Stephen Kay. Stephen was born in 1955 to the late Chipman and Ruth (Moore) Kay. He was the second youngest of four children. He is survived by sisters, Margaret Richards (Everett), Berwick; Linda Shannon (David Hatfield), New Germany; a brother, David (Bonnie), Ohio; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a nephew, Stephen. Stephen began his professional career as a hairdresser in 1972. He started a shop in Bridgetown and then decided to move to Halifax where he became partner in a shop on Bayers Road. He then decided to move to Parrsboro where he opened a shop in his Aunt Evelyn's house. His love of life did not ebb after his stroke in 1991 but only gave him more time to enjoy it. Parrsboro was elated to see his return from Halifax in February. We will always miss our "Special K".
