BLACKBURN. Viola June – 82, Bible Hill, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Friday morning, October 17, 2014, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born August 8, 1932, in Truro, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence and Muriel (Higgins) McCallum. Viola is survived by her husband of 58 years, Leslie "Les" Blackburn; children, Heather (David) Fisher, Masstown; Andrew (Jane) Blackburn, Clifton; grandchildren, Leigh Fisher, Gillian Blackburn; sister, Gwen Frankland, Petrolia, Ontario; brothers, Ron (Pat) MacCallum, Upper North River; Chris (Maria) McCallum, Valley, Colchester County; many nieces and nephews. Yorke at the South Cumberland Community Care Centre, Parrsboro on Thursday, October 30, 2014 following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Born in Five Islands, she was a daughter of the late Frederick and Josephine (Canning) Aylward. Ethel is survived by her loving husband of 20 years, Darrell Yorke. Vernon was born in Truro and was the son of the late Frederick and Mildred (Campbell) Walsh. Vernon worked as a miner in Sudbury, Ont., Leaf Rapids, Manitoba and in the Yukon. He was employed as a truck driver for several years. He enjoyed trout and bass fishing and spending time fixing older cars. Born in Truro he was the son of the late James Geddes and Jean Elizabeth (Casford) Webster. He attended Willow Street Elementary School and Colchester Academy. John studied civil engineering at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick and science at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College. He worked for over twenty eight years with the Department of Transportation and Communications as a Survey Technician, working on over thirty of Nova Scotia’s bridge structures. He accepted early retirement from the Provincial Civil Service in 1994. He is survived by his daughter, Kimberly (David Pomeroy) Webster, Dartmouth; sons, James Terry, Pugwash and Steven (Cindy Kincaid), Onslow Mountain; grandsons, Daniel and Ian Cameron; granddaughter, MacKay "Kaydee" Kincaid/Webster; sister, Bertha Smith; brother, Raymond Priest; nephew, Darren Gray; niece, Kelly Bruce (Wade). He was a son of Gloria P. (Salter) Himelman, Dartmouth, and the late Everett F. Himelman. He lived most of his life in Wellington, Nova Scotia. He was a proud Constable of the Dartmouth Police Department and retired after 30 years of service as a senior accident reconstructive analyst. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Barbara-Ann (Cormier) Himelman; a daughter, Sherilynn Himelman; sons, Christopher Himelman (Jennifer); Michael Himelman (Ashley). He was a proud grandfather who enjoyed every moment with his six granddaughters and grandson. Also, survived by his mother, Gloria Himelman; brothers, Donald Himelman (Wendy); Eric Himelman (Louise); Paul Himelman (Sandra); and sister, Margaret Himelman-Doiron (Kenneth). Predeceased only by his beloved father, Everett Himelman who passed away October 6th, 2014 at the age of 93. Leonard was born in Bass River in 1923 and was a son of the late Arnie and Verna (Gilbert) Rutherford. Leonard enjoyed gardening, furniture making and outdoor activities. He worked at Dominion Chair Co. and construction work. Born in Amherst, he was predeceased by his lovely wife, Rose Marie Graham. He was the son of the late Clara Eleanor (Ogilvie) Graham and Colin Herbert Graham, and stepfather Almon "Bud" Newcombe. Dale's 20-year career with the Canadian Armed Forces included a UN tour in Egypt, a posting to CFS Alert and finally CFB Lahr, Germany, where he and his wife raised their children and where he also retired from the military. He is survived by his son, Don (Rhonda) Graham and daughter Dana (Jimmy) Lai; grandchildren, Emmett Lai; Ronnie, Marcus, Matthew, Amanda and Michael Graham; brother, Douglas Graham and sister, Barbara Graham. Born in Truro, he was a son of the late Murray Sr. and Marjorie (Faulkner) Gilchrist. Murray joined the military serving with the RCASC from 1955-1967 and worked as a chef attached to the 2nd Battalion of Canadian Guards. In 1961 he served in the Far North, ALERT communication. Later he served with NATO in Cyprus with the Peacekeeping Force, 1964-65. In 1967 he moved back to Nova Scotia where he served as a chef in the Stonehouse Restaurant and then the Truro Jail until his retirement. He is survived by daughter, Edwina (Willard) Schwantz, Petawawa, Ont.; son, Wayne, Debert; brothers, Neil, Rod; grandchildren, Jeff (Robin), Jennifer (Brandon) Williams, Brad (Courtney) Kennedy, Amy (Mike) Emerson, Holly (Colby) Espinola; sisters-in-law, Betty (Lester) Strout, Joy Weatherbey; brother-in-law, Allen (Irene); several great-grandchildren. Upper Economy, Nova Scotia passed away peacefully in her sleep in her home in Upper Economy. Beloved wife of the late Austin Primeau, wartime RCAF, who fell madly in love with her when they met in Glasgow, Scotland. Arrived in Halifax at Pier 21 on the RMS Queen Mary on June 6, 1946. An amazing mother and mother-in-law to David Primeau (Sheila) of Ottawa, Mitchell Primeau (Alice) of Moncton, William Primeau (Rose) of Dartmouth , Robert Primeau from Upper Economy, and Jane Curley (Terry) of Ottawa. Grandmother of 10 and great-grandmother of seven. The family will be holding a private memorial at a later date. However, friends and neighbours were invited to join the family and bid farewell to Mum at the Central Economy Recreation Hall on November 16. Lucas was a bright light who impacted everyone he met. He was a creative soul who was looking forward to completing Dalhousie School of Architecture. He loved music, travel, designing new inventions and creating art. He was in the midst of developing a legacy project, "Lead With Your Heart"; sharing tango to improve mental health. www.mattatallvarnerfh.comRUSHTON, Ross C. - age 71, of Valley NS passed away comfortably on November 20th 2014 at the Colchester East Hants Health Center surrounded by his family after a brave 2 year battle with cancer. Born at Westchester Station on November 9, 1943 he was the son of the late Percy and Jean (Roblee) Rushton. Left to mourn are his wife of 48 years, Jane (Schurman) Rushton, son Chris (Angie), Wolfville, daughter Heidi Rushton of Chicago Il, and granddaughters Lauren and Emma Rushton of Wolfville. He is also survived by sisters Delia Herman and Sharon Broughton. Along with his parents he was predeceased by brothers Curry and Harry Rushton and step-father Harold Broughton. He grew up in Oxford where he attended school and later attended Success Business College in Truro. In 1980 he started his own business consisting of a Paint Company, Car Dealership and Machine Wholesale Company. He retired in 1998 to spend more time with his beloved wild blueberry fields. He had harvested his first blueberry crop when he was 15 years old and never looked back. He was a 42 year member of United Commercial Travelers and a member of Widow Son Lodge AM FM 48 River Philip for 30 years. Cremation has taken place. Visitation was held November 23. PATRIQUIN, Charlotte Kay – 57, Truro passed away on Friday, September 26, 2014 in the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, surrounded by her family and friends. Born in Truro, she was the daughter of Fran Burgoyne-Jackson and the late "Keith" Graham and stepfather, Bill Jackson. Charlotte’s smiling face and demeanor touched so many lives and brought out the best in everybody she met. She enjoyed the presence of her entire family and friends at all times. Charlotte had an immense love for nature and the outdoors doing such things as gardening, hiking in the woods and geocaching with family and friends. She was employed for the last number of years at Home Hardware Distribution Center, Debert. Charlotte is survived by her husband, Kenneth "Lynn"; sons, Brent (Tara Mortenson), Onslow, Cory, Onslow; grandchildren, Stone, Alyssa, Tristen; sisters, Judith (Paul) Marsh, Dartmouth, Donna Graham, Great Village, Debbie (Kevin) Shipley, Truro; several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Special thanks to Palliative Care nurse, Sue Gibbons, Dr. Courtney Smith and VON Michelle Maillet and all other VON nurses for all the support and exceptional loving care for Charlotte permitting her to spend the summer at home. STEPHENS, Louise Shirley - 92, Truro, passed away on Saturday, September 27, 2014 in the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Moose River, Halifax County, she was the daughter of the late Neil and Naomi Redden. Louise in her earlier years was employed at Layton’s Snack Bar and Fletchers Restaurant. She was a life member of the Colchester Regional Hospital Auxiliary, yearly volunteer with the Hub Bub and member of the Ladies Guild at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church. MORSE, Paul K. – Age 91, of Parrsboro passed away peacefully on Monday, September 29, 2014 at Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan. Born in Parrsboro, he was a son of the late Horace and Annie (Merriam) Morse. Paul served during the Second World War with the Merchant Marine, and with the Royal Canadian Navy. He later operated a small business in Parrsboro before moving to New Jersey, where he worked in the food industry for more than 25 years. Following his retirement, he returned with the "love of his life", Rhoda to his hometown. He was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #45, Parrsboro. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Rhoda Milberry; a sister, Margaret (Morse) (Currie) Beutel in 2010; and brother, Gerald in 2008. MILLIGAN, Carter Ashley – 57, Masstown passed away October 18, 2014 at home. Born in Dutch Settlement, he was the son of Lucy (Ashley) and the late Keir Milligan. Carter was a long standing member of the IBEW 625 Electrical Union. He enjoyed golfing with his brother, Kirk, riding his Harley, traveling and spending time with his family and friends. DAVIS, Milford B. "Miff" – 77, of Apple River passed away Monday, October 20, 2014 at South Cumberland Community Care Centre, Parrsboro. Born in Advocate Harbour, he was a son of the late Ransford and Evelyne (Fletcher) Davis. His passion and love for the game of hockey lead him and his wife Marjorie to begin Deuville’s Rink in the late 50s. The Hockeyville experience of 2006 had a huge impact on his life. The support of Salmon River and area was overwhelming to Web and showed how very important the rink and his passion had become to the community. He is survived by two daughters, Darlene (Carl) Weatherbee, Donna McCallum; three sons, Leroy (Virginia), Owen (Lorraine), Ellery (Sheryl), all of Salmon River, 13 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; sisters-in-laws, Helen, Vivian and Audrey. Born in Truro on August 7, 1974, he was the youngest child of the late Donald and Irene (Dunlap) Armsworthy. Born at Glasgow Mountain, he was the eldest child of the late Perry and Marie (Allen) Dowe. Isaac was a veteran of World War II. He was a ‘Jack of All Trades’ having worked in lumber camps, the shipyard, at carpentry, built and operated his own sawmill and built more than sixty 28 ft. boats in his dooryard. In his later years, he assisted his son with building a 38 ft. fishing vessel and his lobster career. He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, the former Helen Smith in 2003; his son, Larry in 2009; brothers Sterling and Bill; sisters-in-law, Donna and Rozelle; brothers-in-law, Paul and Bernie; three nephews. Ernie proudly started his career with the RCAF which took him to Europe and throughout Canada. He spent three years in France working for NATO in Mosselle before moving back to Canada in 1960. Ernie’s final career was with Industrial Estates Limited where he was the driving force behind the creation of the Debert Industrial Park, retiring in 1989. Though Ernie retired, he never stopped working. Some of his many volunteer positions included President of Crime Stoppers, Lieutenant-Governor of Kiwanis, President of the Truro Chamber of Commerce, President of the Halifax Board of Trade and others too numerous to mention. Ernie was a longtime member of Markland Masonic Lodge #99 AF & AM, Kingston. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Lenore Audrey (Garrard); his parents, Fred and Hazel Lund; his sister, Shirley (Dr. James R.) Brown. He was born in Antigonish to Jack and Mary Agnes (Chisholm) MacKinnon. He served overseas with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals during World War II. Returning to Canada John worked with CP Tel for 24 years in NS, NB and Maine before working for the Federal Government at Camp Debert, retiring in 1981. Dad’s decades of volunteer work with the Legion included committee work. He was a past President and served as Zone Commander. Rev. Dennis Russell - Age 62, Falmouth, Hants Co. It is with heavy hearts that we say good-bye to a loving Husband, Father, Papa, Uncle, and Friend! Dennis was called home by his Heavenly Father on Wed., July 23, 2014. Born in Truro, he was the foster son of Stuart and Hazel (Corbett) Rector from the time he was a baby and growing up in Bass River. His mother, through her Christian faith, groomed him for his calling to serve as Pastor in various communities – Debert, Belmont, Bathurst, Milton, Plymouth, and Falmouth. During his years of pastoring, Dennis not only ministered to his churches but served the communities in various capacities. His smile and twinkle in his eyes always brought comfort and peace to those he came in contact with. Born on August 3, 1933 in Halifax, he was the son of the late Elmer and Florence Worsley. Don grew up in Armdale and in his earlier years enjoyed sailing and racing. He also excelled at a number of sports including fastball, football and hockey. As a member of the Greenwood Bombers, he enjoyed his on-field exploits in football. Don served as a flying officer (Navigator), flying the Lancaster for the R.C.A.F. He was devoted to his wife of nearly 60 years, Jean. Don was employed with 3M Canada, retiring in 1996. Born in Parrsboro, he was the youngest son of the late John and Annie (Wells) Morrissey. Glen was a Korean War Veteran serving from 1950 to 1952. He served on the front lines transporting the wounded by ambulance. Following the war, he moved his family to Goose Bay, Labrador where he worked at the American Air Force Base. Later he returned to Nova Scotia where he worked in the road building industry for R.K. Chappell, Ian Sinclair and Dexter. Glen received the Ambassador for Peace Medal in 2013 in recognition of dedicated service during the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, the former Geraldine Aylward; daughter, Glenda Morrissey, Highland Village; son, Joseph Morrissey (Tanya Ward), Truro; several nieces and nephews. Gail was born in Truro to the late Max and Betty (Hendsbee) Wyllie on May 31, 1953. Gail retired in 2002 from Forest Safety Society of Nova Scotia due to a major stroke. Her recovery was an inspiration to all who knew and loved her, also her continued zest for life. Gail was a selfless person always concerned for others. HAMPTON, Mary Julia (Smith), Lower Onslow passed away in the early hours of July 19th in the Colchester East Hants Health Centre. Born in Eureka, Pictou County on June 3rd, 1930 she was the youngest daughter of the late Perl and Sadie (Hayman) Smith. Mary moved to Stellarton where she met and married the love of her life, Fred. In 1958 they moved to Bible Hill where she became a lifetime member of St. David's UCW and enjoyed singing in the choir. She was a Cub leader as well as an active member of St. John's Ambulance. A further move with her family in 1964 saw Mary become a busy member of the Margaret Jean Lacey UCW group and the choir of the Onslow United Church. In 2010 she retired from singing with 66 years as a member of various choirs. Her married life revolved around her husband, Fred and her two boys, Freddy and Stanley and in later years her two grandchildren, Shane and Amanda and their families. Mary is survived by Fred, her husband of nearly 64 years; her sons, Fred Jr. (Diane), Salt Springs, and Stanley (Shirley), Onslow; her grandchildren, Shane (Katy), Pictou, and Amanda (Matt), Lower Sackville; her dearly – loved great grandboys,Will, Finley, Sam and Cooper. McGLASHING, Mildred "Serena" (Whippie) – 81, Truro, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2014. Born in Belmont, she was a daughter of the late Percy "Beecher" and Mary (Wilson) Whippie. Serena graduated from the Registered Nursing Program at Moncton General Hospital, NB and then came to Truro in 1956 where she worked at the Colchester Regional Hospital and was responsible for opening the first Recovery Unit. Chief Lawrence Alexander Paul, born in Saint John, New Brunswick. After suffering a long illness, surrounded by family and friends, passed away at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, on May 28, 2014, he was 79. Chief Paul was raised on the Shubenacadie Indian Reserve, now Indian Brook, and attended the Indian day school on the Reserve. Later in life Paul joined the Canadian Navy and Army. He attended many educational courses during his younger years and was a graduate of Success Business College, Truro. He used negotiating skills and lobbying tactics very skillfully in his role as Band Chief, which realized many groundbreaking economic opportunities for his community and for other First Nation Communities. Paul served several terms as a Millbrook Mi’kmaw community Band Councillor and went on to serve 28 years as the community’s Chief. Among his many outstanding accomplishments were he was the driving force behind the founding of the Millbrook Power Center, a founding chief of the Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq, the Atlantic Policy Congress, etc. In recognition of his economic development skills Saint Mary’s University, November 14, 2004, awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Civil Law Degree. Chief Paul was predeceased by his parents, William Gabriel Paul and Sarah Agnes Noel; a son Shawn; brothers Frank, John and Robert; sisters, Francis, Eileen, Sylvia, Violet Lewis and Rhoda. He is survived by his estranged wife Jane Markie; sons Chief Terry Paul (Tracy), John Paul and Lance Paul; two daughters Sharon Touchie (Dave) and Cindy Paul. GRAY, (Irving) Dorothy, 97, of Millbank, NB, passed away on Saturday, June 7, 2014, at the Miramichi Regional Hospital. Born in Millbank, NB, she was the daughter of the late William and Ruby (Currie) Irving. Dorothy married Earl Gray of Glenholme and for more than forty years she was an active member of the Glenholme community and church. A few years after Earl’s death, she returned to live in Millbank, NB. Dorothy is survived by two sisters: Phyllis MacKenzie and Bridget Creighton, both of Miramichi, NB and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by four sisters: Ruby Gray, Jean Russell, Catherine Campbell and Queenie Patterson and four brothers: Joe, William, Jack and Andrew. RAFUSE, Wallace S. "Wally" – 82, of Amherst, and formerly of Southampton passed away Monday, May 5, 2014 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan. Born in Parrsboro, he was a son of the late Frederick and Genesta (Smythe) Rafuse. Wally served with the Canadian Armed Forces both in Canada and Germany. He later was employed with Corrections Canada at the Springhill Penitentiary for many years. He was a member of Legion Branch #45, Parrsboro, and also the Knights of Pythias. In his early years, he had played in many old-time country bands, leading up to his own band called the ‘The Old Timers’. He was a musician of many talents with the ability to play almost any instrument, having been self-taught by having an ear to the fine art of music. Wally and his wife, Eva owned and operated the Green Acres Barn Dances in Southampton for many years. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. SCOTT, Shepard Philbrick - 100, Sutherland's Lake, formerly of Onslow and Debert. On May 12, 2014, the mountain railway carried him away to that blissful shore and his angels came to join him in God's grace forevermore. Retirement should have meant just that but instead it meant cutting 15 cord of wood for him and his kids every year, going west to work on the harvest, moose hunting in Newfoundland, renovating the lake house, doing upholstery, gardening, woodworking, and downhill skiing 4-5 days a week at Ski Wentworth. He was so proud at 80 when he became their first lifetime skier achievement award recipient and was able to ski for free till the ripe old age of 86. He just found NEW hobbies and embraced the internet at age 92, he was a quick study and wore out two laptops. His devoted nephew, Warren kept him entertained every night playing 45's and took him to the weekly card parties in Londonderry, where he prevailed as champion for 2013. Survived by daughter, Jeannie Samad, Truro; son, Kevin (Sylvia), Debert; grandchildren, Mona, John, and David, cousins, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Helen (Gamble), daughter, Susan, and infant daughter, Judith; brother, Robert and son-in-law, Dr. Ahmad Samad.
