EATON, Eileen, Great Village, Colchester County, died 20 March 2015 at home, aged 90. Born in Helen's Bay, Northern Ireland, she was the only daughter of the late George and Georgina (Galbraith) Downey. She attended Glenlola School, Bangor, Co. Down, and Victoria College, Belfast. She obtained the Teacher's Certificate of the National Froebel Foundation in 1945. She taught in Armagh, Northern Ireland, and Slough, England, before coming to Canada in 1952 to teach at Edgehill School for Girls in Windsor, N.S. She taught the school year of 1959/60 at Windsor Elementary. In December, 1959, she married Vernon Edwin Eaton, second son of Lt. Col. Edwin Keiler Eaton and Edith Marguerite (Layton) Eaton at Annapolis Royal. In August 1960, she and her husband moved to Great Village, where she taught as supply and term teacher at Great Village Elementary. A Girl Guide and Guide Leader in Northern Ireland, she continued as a Guide Leader when she came to Canada, ending her Guiding career as District Commissioner for Hants County. Starting in 1976, she spent 10 years as a 4-H Leader in Great Village. She also enjoyed the Women’s Institute in the Great Village in the 1960s. She was an active Vestry member at St. Luke’s Anglican Church in Bass River. After the family moved to St. James United Church in Great Village, she served on the Board of Stewards, the Church Session, and the Executive of the UCW for many years. She served as Secretary-Treasurer of the St. James Sunday School as well, and will be remembered for her many years of supplying and organizing flowers for the church. She and Vernon were active members of Great Village Garden Club, having joined in 1961 after moving to Great Village. As well as the local garden club, she represented Great Village at the Nova Scotia Association of Garden Clubs, and served on the Provincial Executive several times. She was noted for her research and promotion of home composting and small space gardening, and educated many Nova Scotians on these topics. She was twice selected as Nova Scotia’s Gardener of the Year. Surviving are sons, James and daughter-in-law Patricia Murray of Nepean, ON and Peter and partner Marcone da Silva of Espirito Santo, Brazil, and grand-children Keith Murray-Sutcliffe and Liam Murray Eaton. She was predeceased by her husband Vernon, and her brothers Sydney Downey (Monica) and Myles Downey (Sonia), both of Weston-Super-Mare, England. In her last years she delighted in having become a grandmother, and made regular trips to visit her grandchildren in Nepean (Ottawa), where she made new friends. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held on May 23 at the former St. James United Church in Great Village. Her sons would like to pay tribute to her neighbours in Great Village, who kept a careful eye on her over the last 20 years while they were away pursuing careers. John enjoyed whittling and also loved to sing. John had a great sense of humor and enjoyed making others laugh. Born November 9, 1939, in Wolfville, he was a son of the late John and Elsie (Bauchman) Smith. He attended schools in Wolfville, Acadia University and University of Maine. Eric’s passion was teaching, from elementary to high school grades, in schools throughout Kings County, Nova Scotia. He was a professor at Nova Scotia Teachers College, Intermediate Department, for over 20 years, and retired when the college closed. Eric truly enjoyed supervising students in practice teaching positions in many of the schools throughout Nova Scotia. Eric is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Catherine (Wetmore); son, Colin, Truro; daughter, Susan (Darcy) Sinclair, Fort Smith, Northwest Territories; daughter-in-law, Clarissa Smith, Nobleford, Alberta; grandchildren, Samantha and Brayden Sinclair and Charlie and Andrew Smith; sisters-in-law, Louisette Smith, Ontario; Pam Smith, St. John’s, Newfoundland; many nieces and nephews. Phillip was a dedicated teacher and early in his career taught at Bible Hill Junior High, and later as a teacher and vice-principal at the Central Colchester Junior High School in Central Onslow. Born in New Canaan, he was a son of the late Medley and Gladys (Rector) Meldrum. Norby was a veteran of World War II serving with the Carleton-York Regiment with the infantry, serving primarily in the Italian Campaign. He returned to Nova Scotia where he married Eudora Pettigrew, soon moving to British Columbia for four years. He returned to Nova Scotia where he worked with C. Ernest Harrison & Sons Ltd. for many years. He later was employed as a Game Warden with the Nova Scotia Department of Lands and Forests (Natural Resources) retiring in 1984. He was a member of Trinity United Church, Parrsboro, where he served as an elder for many years. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias, Southampton Lodge. He is survived by daughters, Darlene Canning (Kerr), Ste. He loved to go four wheeling, hanging out with his friends and going to the camp. He was a person who always stepped in and helped someone in need. He worked at Uphams Carstar Collision in Onslow. He was a member of the Great Village Fire Brigade. Marshall will be missed by everyone who knew him. SIMONS, Edward Alexander "ED", age 84 of Merritt, BC, and formerly of Campbell River, BC passed away February 20, 2015. Edward, the oldest of 12 children of Arthur and Grace (Fountain) Simons, was born on February 28, 1931 in Westchester. At the age of 19, Ed joined the Canadian Artillery and served for 15 years in Korea and Europe. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and a life member of the Korean Veterans Association. After his release from the army he worked in mining and the pulp mills until he retired in 1996. He is survived by his children, Kathy, John, Joanne and Michael from his first marriage to Kathleen Ryan; step-daughters, Diane (Sam) and Barb McKinlay, with whom he lived with until his death; and his remaining brothers and sisters, Art (Noreen), Ken (Gail), Grace, Mary (Don) and Ellen (Dan). He was pre-deceased by his wife, Hilda; his parents, brothers, Gordon and Henry and sisters, Shirley and Jean. A memorial service for Ed will be held on April 25, 2015 at 11 am in Bethany Lutheran Church, 201 Birch Street, Campbell River, BC. MOSHER, Karl Hay, the son of George Mosher and Minnie Crouse, was born on February 10, 1928, in Halifax, and lived in Debert, for most of his life. He married Eleanor Fowler in 1959 and they were the proud parents of Margo Joy, Lisa Robyn, Carla Dawn and Andrew Karl. McDOW, Clyde Edward – 91, Londonderry. It is with heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of our father Clyde at his home in Londonderry at the age of 91 on February 22, 2015. Clyde was born in Waterville, Kings County, on January 17, 1924 to the late Robert and Nancy (Deadder) McDow. Clyde worked most of his adult life at Lafarge in Brookfield and retired in 1989. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing cribbage. McNUTT, Leland Stanford – 88, Debert passed away February 23, 2015 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Lower Debert, he was the son of the late Frederick and Lily Mae (Vance) McNutt. Leland began farming and then logging and trucking which became a great passion in his life. He was also a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 106 in Debert. He was always a person who loved to help anyone who needed assistance. He loved to sing though often just to himself. DAYE, James "Jim" Percy – 61, Bible Hill passed away unexpectedly, February 24, 2015 at home. Born in Truro, he was the eldest son of Mary (Harrington) and the late Percy Daye. Jim was a lifelong truck driver for Thompson’s Transfer, Gerald Battist Trucking and a very proud MBW Courier tractor-trailer driver. He was an avid card player, especially 45’s and crib. JOHNSON, Ivan M. "Pete" – 82 of Londonderry passed away on March 2, 2015 at the Mira. DOWE, Perry A. - Age 77, of Ward’s Brook, Cumberland County passed away Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at South Cumberland Community Care Centre, Parrsboro. Born in Ward’s Brook, he was a son of the late Perry and Marie (Allen) Dowe. Perry worked at the Wagstaff and Hatfield Shipyard in Port Greville for many years. Perry was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and gardening. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family. CONNORS, William J. "Bill" – 82, of Parrsboro passed away Friday, March 20, 2015 at Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan. Born in Parrsboro, he was a son of the late Bernard and Kathleen (Warren) Connors. Bill was a self-employed contractor, specializing in carpet and cushion floor installation, as well as interior painting. Upon his retirement to the Parrsboro area, he was a most active volunteer sharing his expertise and hard work to numerous organizations. Bill was recognized with the Queen Elizabeth Jubilee Medal for his volunteerism in the community. He was a long serving member of the Knights of Columbus, Minas Masonic Lodge No. 67, Parrsboro and was Past President of Legion Branch No. 45, Parrsboro. She retired in 1978. She moved with her husband to Spencer’s Island in 1979. Frank enjoyed time with his family at his favorite place, "the camp" on Taylor Lake in Earltown, N.S. Frank was well known in the tire industry. He started working in the early 1950’s. His career began in Truro at Andy’s Tire Shop. He later left in 1973 to start A & B Tires LTD with a partner in Lower Sackville, N.S. This led to the local business of A-1 Tires Limited in 1978 and joined in ownership in 1984 by his three sons to present date. He is survived by his wife, Florence G. (Wynn); three sons, Earle (Shelly), Ross (Sandra) and Joseph (Susan); grandchildren, Alisha, Alan, Matthew, Melissa and Bret. He was predeceased by sisters, Jean Allen and Helen Porter. Born in Five Islands, he was a son of the late Basil and Evelyn (MacBurnie) Davis. Junior was a construction superintendent in the oil, gas, and pulp & paper industries, working primarily with MBB Power Services. He was particularly proud to have received his 50 year service pin from the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Lodge 73. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, liked snowmobiling, four-wheeling, sports and enjoyed the companionship of his many friends and co-workers. Junior, with his son Terry, won the Canadian Ice Racing Federation - Snowmobile Drag Racing Championships in 2002. He was very proud of the community from which he came from, Five Islands, and was a tremendous ambassador for sharing all that this region had to offer. Junior’s greatest joy in life was his family, his children, grandchildren and the love of his life, Lynda whom he lost in 2010. Mom was a devoted mother, grandmother, and caregiver to many, always an open door to whoever needed a friend, meal or place to stay. She began her working days as a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse, moved to Parrsboro and worked various jobs until becoming a hairdresser which she loved for over 30 years, often going above and beyond the hairdo, providing lunches and snacks, running errands, giving drives, and even taking her cape and rollers on house calls for special occasions or when people could not come to her. She loved to bake and cook, quilt, sew, and knit, do jigsaw puzzles, go for drives, watch PBS concerts, Blue Jays in the summer, Leafs in the winter, and sitting on her verandah looking out at the beautiful view of the water, surrounded by family and her "grandkitties and granddoggies." Ian was a hunter and fisherman extraordinaire, travelling to Newfoundland and Cape Breton and Wallace Bay to hunt moose, deer, ducks; to Saskatchewan hunting snow geese; and to Alaska to fish, although he had to catch and release much to his chagrin. Ian loved his dogs, Emma and Sadie, and often took Emma with him in the truck. Ian is survived by loving wife of thirty seven years, Betty (Lockhart), and his children, Michelle (Tim) Rushton, Mandy (Wayne Higgins) Blackie, and George (Erin Densmore) Blackie. He was a well-known and respected member of the community and served as Chairman of the local YMCA, member of the Colchester Regional Hospital Foundation and Chair of the CCAA National Basketball Championship Committee. David was a loyal volunteer for the Progressive Conservative Party of Nova Scotia and the Conservative Party of Canada. A gifted athlete, he excelled in basketball and played for both the Acadia University Varsity Basketball Team (’57-‘60) and the "legendary" Thunderbirds. A Truro resident his entire life, David gave back to the community as a strong supporter of minor sports programs as a coach, sponsor, organizer and fan. HEGAN, Fern Eileen - Age 79 of Victoria, B.C. passed away peacefully January 1, 2015 in Gorge Road Hospital. Born in Londonderry, N.S. she was the daughter of the late Harold (Pat) and Ellen Miller (Fountain). Fern is survived by her husband of 61 years, Arthur Hegan of Bass River, children Leigh (Doreen) Hegan and Heather (Steve) Meadows and 2 grandchildren Karyn (John) Tanaka and Lorne Hegan and one great grandchild Midori. She is also survived by sisters Elaine (Jim) MacKinnon, Shirley (Doug) Cooke, Audrey (Logan) Spencer and brothers Wilfred (Fronz) Miller and Glen (Dennise) Miller. Fern spent her younger years in Londonderry before moving to B.C. In her later years, Fern dearly loved her many visits to Nova Scotia and the precious time that she and Art spent at their cottage at Five Houses. |
BAKKER, Trent Curtis – age 19, Onslow Mountain Road, passed away suddenly on Monday, December 15, 2014 in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Trent ‘s passions included hunting, fishing, four-wheeling, tinkering in the garage and welding with his friends, co-workers and Uncle Steve at Portable Welders. There were so many special people in Trent’s life we couldn’t possibly name them all without writing a book. But you know who you are! Born in Truro, he was a son of Rick and Rhonda (Hingley) Bakker. MURRAY, Robert Reid "Bob" – 95, Truro passed away at home on December 15, 2014. Born in New Glasgow, he was the son of the late Olding and Jean (Reid) Murray. He was educated at the University of New Brunswick and graduated in 1941 with B.Sc. in Forestry. He then immediately went overseas where he served as Second Lieutenant with the Corp. of Forestry Engineers. Bob worked many years in the forestry industry in Nova Scotia and finished his career at Scott Paper serving as Woodlands Manager and Vice-President until retiring in 1981. After retirement he was a co-founder of MacTara Lumber, Middle Musquodoboit. Bob was inducted into the N.S. Forestry Hall of Fame in 2006. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Betty; sons, Mac (Marylew), Pomquet, Don, Fredericton, Michael (Roya), Truro; grandchildren, Ritchie, Duncan, Peter, Mike, Sarah, Robynne, Nick, Stephanie; great-grandchildren, Isaac, Aiden, Wil, Molly, Callie, Emerson, Elliott. WIITA, D. Aileen – 94, of Parrsboro passed away Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at Centennial Villa, Amherst with her daughter, Wendy by her side. Born in Parrsboro, she was a daughter of the late Maxwell and Elsie (Hatfield) Clarke. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Aileen worked for General Electric in Barrie, Ontario for many years. Upon her retirement, she enjoyed entertaining, and was an avid traveler. DOYLE, Corenne Nan – 72, Salmon River - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mom, sister, companion, grandmother, great-grandmother on Thursday, January 8, 2015 surrounded by her loved ones in the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born July 4, 1942 in Truro, she was the daughter of the late Lambert Jr. and Edith (Stiles) MacDonald. She was a member of the Valley United Church and the Salmon River Fire Brigade Ladies Auxiliary and past president. She worked as a secretary, accounts payable for Eastern Transport, then became Terminal Manager for CN Route for several years. Before retirement she worked in Accounts Payable for Peter Kohler Windows. She will be sadly missed by her lifelong friend, Marilyn Watson and neighbor Ronda Smith. SCHMITT, Michael "Mike" Cairns , 44, of Bible Hill passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Saturday January 10, 2015 at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre. Mike was born on December 2, 1970 in Pictou, Nova Scotia. He was the son of Margaret (Henderson) Schmitt and the late Lothar Schmitt. Survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Karyn MacKinnon; their children Julia Schmitt, Brody Schmitt, and Brayden Schmitt. Mother Margie, Sisters Linda (David) Charbonneau (Hammonds Plains), Tanya (Scott) Boone (Yellowknife). Parents-in-law, Jim and Elaine MacKinnon (Truro); and sister-in-law, Jill (Koko) Gillis (Guelph); several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents John Cairns and Bertha (Lowden) Henderson; paternal grandparents Heinrich and Berta Schmitt of Germany; father Lothar and an infant brother John Mark. Mike worked as Operations Manager for the Tim Hortons Warehouse in Debert for 20 years. Mike was passionate about hockey, whether that be coaching or watching. Mike loved coaching minor hockey and gave countless hours to the sport. He believed in making players better people not just better hockey players. Midge was a graduate of the Nova Scotia Hospital School of Nursing, and was very proud of her long and dedicated career as a nurse. Born at South Side, Shelburne County April 26, 1927, he was the son of the late James Harold and Isabelle Mae (Nickerson) Stoddart. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary (Wilson) Stoddart; daughters, Patricia (Gerald) Core, Carnegie, PA and Bonnie (Randy) Withrow, Bible Hill; son, Kendall Stoddart, Masstown; grandsons, Michael (Becka) Terry, Borden, ON; Jason (Kim) Withrow, Bedford; Cory (Julie) Withrow, Beechville; Kevin Stoddart, Baker Lake, NU and David (Ashley) Tunnillie, Kentville; granddaughters, Jennifer Terry, Kingston, ON; Kristi (Brian)Withrow, Petawawa, ON and Crystal (Vernon) Johnson, Truro; son-in-law, Larry (Josephine) Terry, Cape Broyle, NL; daughter-in-law, Ruth Neevick, Baker Lake, NU; 10 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews. Born Dec. 24, 1931 he was a son of the late Chris and Alice (Lockhart) Robertson. At a very early age he went to live with his Uncle and Aunt, Norman and Belle (Lockhart) Waller who raised him on their farm in Lower Truro. Doug was a car salesman for many years with Willow Mercury/Casey Ford. For years he had his own contracting business. Later he opened his small candy business making fudge and hard candy varieties and again travelled the roads selling, right up until recently. Doug is survived by his wife Eleanor (MCCallum) of 63 years; son, Donnie, (Sharon), Truro; daughters, Janice (Dan) Wile, Waverley, Wendy (Peter) Heckbert, Truro; grandchildren, Evan (Jennifer), Sarah (Warren), Jillian (Christopher), Corey, Scott (Amy), Kari (Ryan), Robbie and Morgan; great grandchildren, Hannah, Alexander, Gabriel, Ryder, Hunter and Kayla; brothers, Owen, Darrel, Ronnie, Roy; sister, Irma. After a valiant battle against old age and in the presence of her daughter, Audrey's spirit was released Home to happily rejoin her departed family and friends, on Monday morning, November 24, 2014. Born June 21, 1921, in Parrsboro, she was a daughter of the late Charles W. and E. Maude (Yorke) Newton. Audrey spent her early years in Fox River and then moved to the USA with her parents where she began school and where her two sisters, Kathleen Rose and Lilyan Mae, were born. In 1928 her family returned to Economy where her mother died of TB. Audrey was then lovingly raised and guided by her Aunt Lila and Uncle Churchill Newton, along with her father and extended family. On her 18th birthday, she married her true love, H. Borden "Bordie" Rector; for 38 years they shared the ups and downs of life together. She lost Bordie on November 4, 1977, and remained a widow until June 12, 2010, when she married Harland B. Akerman at his beach cottage. She and Harland enjoyed travel, fishing and much laughter during their courtship and subsequent 20 months of marriage, ending with Harland's passing on February 12, 2012. Since then, Audrey has lived in long term care, first at Valley View Villa, Pictou County, then at Cedarstone, Truro, where she received excellent, loving care from staff at both facilities. Thank you to all, especially Lisa, Rebecca and Christine and also a special thank you to Gary and Colleen Newton. Despite the difficulties and grief she had in her life, Audrey kept a positive outlook and was well known for her quick wit and loving ways. She was a wonderful mother, friend and citizen. She was a lifetime member of Riverside United Church, Bass River, their UCW, and was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, holding all levels of office, plus many other volunteer activities. A wonderful cook, an avid dancer and one born to entertain, she was the life of any party and was never happier than when surrounded by family and friends. She is survived by her daughter, Colleen Rector, Dartmouth; granddaughters, Kelly Rector, Woodstock, Ontario; Kimberly (Rick) Koch, St. Thomas, Ontario; great-grandchildren, Josh Rector, Tim Koch, Jessica Koch, all of St. Thomas, Ontario; sister, Lilyan M. She later trained as a P.C.W. and upon completion worked at Pinehaven Estates, Halifax. She also worked in the hotel industry in Alberta for a number of years. He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth (Betty); his siblings, Betty, Bob, Jean, Bill, and Lois; his sons, Ralph and Donald; and his grandson, Charlie. He is survived by his brother Ian (Joan) and sister Margaret Boudreau (Cyril); his children, Helen May Kennedy, John (Mary), Mary, Joe, Bill (Tanis), Chris (Karen), Bobb, Jamie (Tracey Earle), Greg (Jane Hazel), 13 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Lorne was raised in Halifax and joined Wilfred Burchell in the practice of law in Truro in 1944. He had a distinguished legal career, in particular in labour dispute resolution and as Chair of the Dairy Commissions in both Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. He was a recipient of the Weldon Award for Unselfish Public Service from the Dalhousie Law School Alumni Association. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Truro since 1946. The family wish to thank Linda Ross and Margie Crossman for their dedication to Lorne and family for the last 10 years, the Palliative Care team, the VON Community Care workers and nurses. In particular, the family wishes to acknowledge the staff and lawyers of Burchell MacDougall, who enabled Lorne to attend his office until two weeks before his death. A longtime resident of Advocate Harbour, formerly of Apple River and for a few years having lived in Hamilton, Ont. Howard passed away suddenly on Sunday, December 7 at his home in Advocate Harbour in his 68th year.
