WILSON, William "Bill" Frederick - August 18, 1929-October 25, 2015 - With sadness yet gratitude for a life lived well, the family of William "Bill" Frederick Wilson share the news of his death at his home in Little Dyke, Nova Scotia. Bill was in his 87th year and will be greatly missed by his family especially his wife of 62 years, Bonnie (Yvonne). Bill is survived by his children, Carolyn (Joe), Sarnia, Ontario, Ruth (Woody), Alton, Bill Jr. (Cathy), Little Dyke; his grandchildren, Allison MacDonald (Al), Ashley MacDonald (Matt), Aaron MacDonald (Laura), Adam MacDonald (Elsa), Desarai Mosher (Brad), Chelsea Wilson (Trevor), Spencer Wynne, Afton Wynne, Joseph Wynne and great-grandchildren, Kaiden and Elena Mosher, Kennedy Mosher, Marisa and Teagan George, Hudson MacDonald. He is also survived by his brothers, David (Dayle), Maccan, Dara (Lois), River Hebert; sister, Audrey Miller, Amherst as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Serena Wilson and his brother, Jim. Bill was an entrepreneur and self starter. For a number of years he was owner operator of W. F. Wilson Transport Ltd. and with his son operated Bill Wilson and Son Service Station Ltd. Funeral Service was held October 28th in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro. Born in Brookville, she was a daughter of the late Norby and Marjorie (Hughes) Dowe. She is survived by her two children, Sandy (Peter) Lockerby, Tatamagouche; Wayne (Charlene) Corbin, Mount Uniacke; eight grandchildren, Alan, Sara, Andrew, David, Cassandra, Colton, Abagayle and Delsin; two great-grandchildren, Anna and Fletcher; sisters, Irene and Millie; brothers, Gerald and Ronald. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Clark; sisters Dorothy and Alice. Her love of cooking and baking turned into a career she enjoyed, at both the Westmorland Institution in Dorchester and a wood’s camp at Sand River. At her request there will be no funeral service, but a memorial for both her and Clark will be held at a later date. July 24, 1932), daughter of the late Stewart and Ethel Moase of New Annan, PEI, died November 13, 2015 at Drumlin Hills, Bridgewater, NS. She was with family in the peace of her home and the love of family and friends. Her husband, the Rev. George H. MacLean, passed away in July. Blessed to be family are children Catherine and Earl (Andrew and Hannah), David and Terri (Carsten and Myra), John and Sherry (Josie and Duncan), George and Laura Lee (Hilary and Abigail), Susan and Chris; her brother Clifford, and her sister Evelyn (Milt Combs), and there are many nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by, brother Keith; sisters-in-law Norma and Joyce; nephews Brian and Jim, and brother-in-law Don. Helen loved the classroom, studying at New Annan School, Kensington High, and Prince of Wales College. After graduating from Mount Allison University, Helen taught in Shizuoka, Japan with the United Church of Canada’s Women’s Missionary Society. Upon her return to Canada in 1956, she was Dean of Women for a year at the United Church School in Naramata, BC. Dear friends introduced her to the love of her life, George, and after a 100-day courtship they married on September 25, 1957. Their children grew up in unconditional love. Helen and George enjoyed happy years in Glenholme, Hampton, Sussex, Truro, and Pentz. They found great joy in their church communities, many benefiting from Helen’s leadership with CGIT, UCW, the deaf community and other groups. They raised their children surrounded by the people of their congregations and communities, many of whom became almost family. Helen was a remarkable quilter, a voracious reader, and a faithful friend. In 2010, Helen and George moved to Drumlin Hills where they continued to enjoy retirement, surrounded by peace and happiness in their large community of neighbours and friends. After generous donations following George's death, Helen's wish is that you find a way to give someone an unexpected helping hand. Helen willed her remains for medical research at Dalhousie University. The memorial service will be at West Side United Church, Pentz, NS on November 23 at 1:30pm. Interment for Mum and Dad will be at a later date in Fernhill Cemetery, Saint John, NB.
VIENNEAU, Eileen R. - Age 82, of Parrsboro, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, November 18th, 2015 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan. Born in Harrison Settlement, she a daughter of the late Fielding and Harriett (Pettigrew) Spence. Eileen enjoyed dancing, and a wide variety of music and lived life to the fullest. She is survived by a daughter, Tammy Gagnon (Richard), Amherst; a son, Tony Vienneau (Marlene Dwyer), Maccan; grandchildren, Jennifer & Jeremy Taylor, Crystal Armstrong, Tracy Lewis, Jody Vienneau; great grandsons, Logan, Coby & Cole; her sisters, Stella Morris, Amherst; Elizabeth McCulley (Allan), Maureen Yorke (Robert), all of Parrsboro; brothers, George (Saundra), Parrsboro; Percy, Amherst; several nieces and nephews. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty (Elisabeth) Lane, children, Bob (Kim), Jo-Ann (Gary Knight), Doug (Wanda), all of Lower Onslow and Terrilyn, Georgia, USA; grandchildren, Amanda, Jonathon, Blake, Courtney, Elissa, Chayce, Sydney, Zaria, B.J. and step grandsons, Christopher and Mathew; six great grandchildren; niece, Joan (Frank) Whippie. Aubrey and Betty were very special Foster Parents to many children over the years. He was predeceased by his parents George and Ethel (Fletcher) and half brothers, Lloyd and Doug Stewart. Aubrey was employed as a mechanic for many years; semi-retired at 60 to drive a school bus for seven years. Aubrey and Betty spent many summers camping at Carrs Brook and Sand Point making friends and memories. More recent years found him laughing with friends at the Open Mic or card games. Family and friends admired him for many reasons. His devotion to "Mom", who he lovingly visited daily, was a tribute to the life they created. There will be no visitation or service at this time. Aubrey’s wish was to be cremated and taken home till Betty joins him. Once together again there will be a family graveside service. During her final five years she was blessed to be compassionately cared for by all of the staff at the South Cumberland Community Care Center in Parrsboro. Dorin was born on Easter Sunday 1923 in Orange, NJ. She was a war bride marrying Canadian soldier George A. Gamblin in 1946. She was predeceased by husband, George in 1977; sister, Jean; beloved son, Peter, and Peter’s daughter Megan. A great cook and party host, she was affectionately known as "Diamond Lil." Lillian was the loving mother of Heather Elliott, Pembroke, ON, Bill Elliott, Truro, Sharon (Gordon) Elliott, Hilden, David Elliott, Toronto, ON and Sara (Terry) Doyle, Acton, ON. Johnson was a dedicated husband, father and friend who took great pride in his family, home and work. He spent many winter months in the woods with his dear friend, the late Gerald "Jump" Fader. A very independent man, Johnson was well-suited to the term "jack of all trades," valuing opportunities to learn and grow from an early age. He had diverse interests and strong opinions, but above all loved gardening, farming, millwork, debating, sharing food and spending time with those he loved. Edmund was born in Berwick, the oldest son of the late W. Burnell and Edna (Sawlor) Reid. He spent his early years in West Advocate and later moved to Worcester, Mass. where he lived with his aunt and uncle, while attending university. His years spent with Margaret and Ralph Gowetz created a home away from home and a relationship that was enduring. After receiving his accounting designation from Bentley College and MBA from Babson College, Ed moved to London, Ontario and began his 30 year career in finance and accounting. It was in London that he met the love of his life, Anne McLarty, who became his wife in 1972. They were blessed with the arrival of their children, Alison May and Andrew Wesley Duncan. After Ed and Anne retired, they moved to West Advocate. Edmund leaves behind his wife, Anne; daughter, Alison May Reid Dawson, St. Thomas, Ont.; son, Andrew, and his wife, Sarah, Caledon, Ont. He was the cherished "Buppa" of their children, Austin and Adelyn. Born in Windsor, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late Alvah and Laurena (Logan) Macumber. Art was a graduate of the Nova Scotia Normal College and Acadia and St. Mary's Universities. A teacher, he taught at Hants West Rural High, Central Colchester High School, J. Lloyd Crowe Secondary School, Trail, B.C., Cobequid Educational Centre and the Nova Scotia Teachers College. After retiring from teaching, Art worked for 11 years with TayMac Tours of Halifax – imparting his knowledge of the Maritimes and its history to many American tourists. Art loved participating in the high school musicals at Cobequid Educational Centre, favorite roles being Fagin in 'Oliver!' and Tevye from 'Fiddler on the Roof'. Art was involved in many local clubs and societies including the Colchester Historical Society, Golden K, Little White Schoolhouse Society and Hubtown Theatre. He is survived by his wife Heather (Marsh); daughters Sarah (Arfon) Hughes, Wales and Jill Macumber, Halifax; grandchildren Ben and Ellen Hughes; brother Francis; niece Alison Macumber. www.ColchesterCommunity.comLARSEN, Olaf H. – Age 81, of Port Greville, Cumberland County, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 11, 2015, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Apple River, he was a son of the late Karl and Mary Alice (Fields) Larsen. Second to being surrounded by family at the dining room table, his favourite place was in the cockpit of an airplane. After a stint in the Royal Canadian Navy, Olaf gave up the seas for the skies and re-mustered to the Royal Canadian Air Force. After his release, he worked for a number of commercial airlines as a Flight Engineer including Quebec Air, Nation Air, and Icelandic Air. Olaf gave up flying for a while and along with the help of his adored son Trevor, he operated Larsen’s Esso in Port Greville for 6 years. He still had the flying bug and he sold the store and back to the skies he went. Olaf worked away from home for the next number of years commuting between Port Greville and Montreal at every opportunity until he finally achieved his ultimate goal and became a fully qualified Flight Engineer on the 747. He was then ready to finally retire and moved permanently back to Port Greville. Another of Olaf’s passions in life was his cars, especially his antiques, including his current 1948 Chrysler, which he proudly displayed every year in the Port Greville Field Day Parade. He took immense pleasure in his grandchildren and they will miss him greatly. He was an exemplary skier whose confidence and style on the slopes earned him the nickname "Tiger". In his earlier years, he was also an avid tennis player and skater. – 78, Bible Hill, was welcomed into the presence of his Saviour on Tuesday morning, July 7, 2015, at his home surrounded by his wife of 52 years and children. Albert was a faithful evangelist traveling to many places with the Gospel he loved. Since being diagnosed with lymphoma 18 months ago, he continued to share this message by print or personal word. He impacted the lives of his family with his example of faithfulness in witness and prayer. This impact was also felt by many others who were saved and encouraged through his testimony. Our father was a young spirited gentleman all of his 90 years. Dedicated and joyously married to Ruth Eileen (Jewett), residing in Truro NS, they shared an eventful life together filled with family events, travel, commitment to work and community. He is survived by five daughters (Pam Davis (Gary), Donna Marryatt (Darrell Westerman), Karen Allaby (Andrew Harper), Sonja Allaby Totten (Jack Power) and Carolyn Allaby Maxwell (David), nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Dad lived a life filled with great humor, life sustenance (faith, food and laughter) and was surrounded by love; he was to his family–irresistible. Born in Bloomfield Station, Kings County, NB on August 6th 1924, an identical twin (Cedric) and was the son of the late Barrington and Bertha Reid Allaby. Stuart adored his three brothers (Spurgeon, Donald and Cedric) who were raised in the mixed farming community of Norton and Sussex NB. Following his graduation from Norton Superior High School in 1942 he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (R.C.A.F.). Following his military service, he enrolled in the Nova Scotia (NS) Agricultural College and completed his B.Sc. (Agr.) at McGill University, Quebec, in 1951. Stuart made a lifetime commitment to agriculture and the people in the industry and professional community. He made many significant contributions towards the advancement of the agricultural and poultry industry in NS and Canada. First working for the NS Department of Agriculture and Marketing (NSDAM) as poultry specialist in 1951, Stuart went on to be Director of Technical Services for the Maritime Co-operative. In 1964, he rejoined NSDAM as Provincial Poultry Superintendent and in 1975 was appointed Director of the Livestock Services Branch which he held until his retirement in 1986. Stuart was a founding partner of ABS Chick Hatchery, New Minas, which is now a part of the ACA Co-operative. Throughout his career, Stuart effectively promoted efficient production and marketing of the poultry industry and established a sound financial foundation in NS. He encouraged the development of supply management programs in Canada and continued to serve those programs acting as Chairman of the NS Natural Products Marketing Council. He was a co-owner of LifeLine Software Consultants which was a pioneering company in the computerized automated environmental control of poultry barns. Under his guidance, the NS Red Meat Inspection Program was implemented, thus assuring Nova Scotia wholesome locally produced meat products. Under his supervision, programs in the areas of livestock herd health, particularly in the dairy and swine sectors, were implemented. Stuart served on various poultry and agriculture related organizations and committees, and has been recognized by his peers. He is an Honorary Member of the Canadian Poultry Association and the Atlantic Provinces Hatchery Association. He held various positions with the following organizations: Atlantic Provinces Poultry Health Committee, NS Egg and Pullet Producers Marketing Board Quota committee, Poultry Council of NS, Institute of Agrologists, Agricultural Institute of Canada, Atlantic Provinces Agricultural Services Co-ordinating Committee, NS Community Pasture Board, Atlantic Provinces Livestock Committee, NS Federation of Agriculture Planning Committee, NS Federation of Agriculture Senate Club, the NS Provincial Exhibition, the Provincial Agricultural Marketing supervisory Association, and the Atlantic Poultry Research Institute. Stuart was inducted into the Atlantic Agricultural Hall of Fame as well received the Max Weiner Award for his contributions to the Canadian poultry industry. Stuart had a strong Christian faith and lived a life he felt was reflective of these beliefs. He was a long standing member of the First Baptist Church, Truro. A celebration and service of thanks to commemorate his wonderful and giving life will be held at the Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro, NS on Friday, July 24, 2015 beginning with a time of visitation from 12-1:30 p.m. followed immediately with a service at 1:30 p.m.; Rev. Loran was born in Toronto where his father; (James) Loran Morrison was on the police force. The family moved to Nova Scotia when he was two and opened a mom and pop store in Economy. He began his career in the Toronto Police Force following in his father’s footsteps. He later joined Amherst police force, then became a member of the Truro Police Service for 23 years, and retired at the rank of Corporal. Loran was well liked and respected by his co-workers and the community. Known as "Robocop" for his physique, he treated all those he met in the same way: with kindness, compassion and integrity. He was fair. He built a loving family, enjoyed life’s simple pleasures, loved his wife and trusted God.
Loran is predeceased by his father, James Loran Morrison; his mother, Iola (Peppard) Morrison. Born in Parrsboro, he was a son of the late Corey E. and Ella (Jenks) Harvey. Malcolm will be remembered for his kindness, good natured humour and dedication to family and friends. After moving to Toronto in 1949, he married his childhood sweetheart and raised his family and lived with traditional maritime values. Malcolm worked at GTE Sylvania until his retirement in 1988 and returned home to Parrsboro enjoying the many summers spent with family and friends, in particular his memorable birthday celebrations. Predeceased by brother, Eric; brothers-in-law, Doug Allen, Raymond Cormier, and namesake, her dear niece, Ruth Nichols. Ruth was a graduate of Normal College, Truro and began her well respected and accomplished career as a school teacher in Apple River. Being community-minded and never shy to join a committee or start one, Ruth was dutiful to many causes and an avid volunteer. Some of her accomplishments (too numerous to mention) include first Chairwoman of the District School Board, first female warden of Cumberland County, one of the original founders of Cape Chignecto Park, President of the F.P.W War Memorial Committee, President of Shore Drive Committee Assoc., as well as having been warden of the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Fox River and also heavily involved in the Liberal Association, both locally and provincially. Ruth was also the recipient of the Confederation of Canada Award, honouring Canadians who were significant contributors in their community. In her spare time, Ruth was an avid gardener, amazing cook and baker and loved a good game of bridge. A heartfelt thank you to the ICU team 5.2 and Neurosurgery 7.3 at the Halifax Infirmary, QEII Health Sciences Centre and to the Fifth floor nurses and staff at the Nova Scotia Rehabilitation Centre, Halifax for your wonderful care and support. Barbara joined the Land Army, England in 1939, during WWII and met our father, George, while he was stationed in England with the Canadian Army and married on August 29th, 1945, arriving in Canada at Pier 21 on July 15th, 1946, aboard the Queen Mary. Mom became a proud Canadian travelling back to England for visits when she could. Mom enjoyed family gatherings, bowling, playing cards, TV Bingo with her friends and many trips with her family. Barbara was a member of the War Brides Association and Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Branch 26, Truro. Born in Helen's Bay, Northern Ireland, she was the daughter of the late George and Georgina (Galbraith) Downey. She obtained the Teacher's Certificate of the National Froebel Foundation in 1945. She taught in Northern Ireland and England, before coming to Canada in 1952 to teach Edgehill School for Girls in Windsor, NS, until 1959. In December, 1959, she married Vernon Edwin Eaton, son of Lt.- Col. Edwin Keiler Eaton and Edith Marguerite (Layton) Eaton. In August 1960, they moved to Great Village, where she taught at Great Village Elementary. A Girl Guide and Guide Leader in Northern Ireland, in Canada she was Guide District Commissioner for Hants County in 1958-1960. She was a 4-H Leader in Great Village, and active in the Women’s Institute. She was a Steward, an Elder, on the Executive of the UCW, and the Secretary-Treasurer of the Sunday School at St James United, Great Village. She also was the church "flower lady" for two decades. She spent 54 years in the Great Village Garden Club. She was twice selected as Nova Scotia’s Gardener of the Year for her promotion of composting and small space gardening. Surviving are sons, James (Patricia Murray), Nepean, ON and Peter (Marcone da Silva), Espirito Santo, Brazil, and grand-children Keith and Liam. She was predeceased by her husband Vernon, and her brothers Sydney (Monica) and Myles (Sonia) Downey, Weston-super-Mare, England. In her last years she delighted in being a grandmother, and made regular trips to visit her grandchildren in Nepean. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held in St. James United Church, Great Village May 23, 2015, Rev. Valerie Kingsbury officiating. Interment at St. Alban’s Church Cemetery, Lequille, on May 24, 2015. ROCKWELL, George Wilson – 72, Belmont passed away on Friday, May 15, 2015 in the Palliative Care Unit of the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Lakeside, on June 12, 1942, he was a son of the late Walter and Vera (Vail) Rockwell. George worked as a machinist and as an apprentice tool and die maker at Purdy Brothers, Halifax and later owned Rockwell’s Ornamental Iron in Truro for 46 years. In later years, he and his wife Barbara operated the Iron Duck Bed and Breakfast, meeting people from all over the world.
